Mozart for me, too;

For those who like Viennese Concerted Mass recordings, this is an outstanding choice. Somewhat the same program as I enjoyed on Easter, but with the magnificent addition of the pure instrument of Emma Kirkby into the mix. Golly gosh she can sing!  0:)

8)

A absolute favourite of mine!

(quite by coincidence, I see now that these two recordings are/were favorites of Premont's...maybe not first-favorites, but up there...I am relieved...autodidacts and box-set dilettantes wander through life insecure...)

Well THAT is certainly true....

I find the sound of these instruments appealing; the 'limitations' of the technology become an essential aspect of the appeal, and not in a merely "charming" or "quaint" way.
and from the Naxos Historical 'rush' box (12 vols.):

Wow, thanks for posting this.  I've wish listed that recording.

Thread duty:

This disc and the first sonata from the second served as a night cap.

That Mosaiques disc is ridiculously good.  The music itself may be of assistance, though. ;)

Sometimes I am accidentally of service!   8)  I like to think of it as a kind of...grace.

Other than the Decca++ Britten complete works, and maybe Badura-Skoda's fortepiano Schubert sonatas, I am sure that the (boxed?) reissue of the Mosaiques' Haydn will be the must-have release of 2013 for me.  Assuming that's even a reality.  (My only source was an email from a Naive employee to a member of another classical forum.  I think they might have mentioned the Mozart as well....?)  The Haydn would be the absolute one new release I would have to have this year, if were forced to choose at gunpoint.

Mozart Symphony #5 B flat K.22, two versions: Pinnock/The English Concert and Marriner/ASMF (with high horns). Marriner is the more aggressive, almost turning the first movement Allegro into a Sturm und Drang piece. Love the added horn parts.

My program these days:

[asin]B000003UWY[/asin]

[asin]B00004YZ36[/asin]

No need for other sets, these sets satisfy.

- Various Beethoven cycles of the symphonies.

- Lim's set of Beethoven sonatas. Planning to listening to Gulda's set.

- Various works of Donatoni, Aperghis and Birtwistle.

- Stravinsky. His complete works. I would like to have some other box-set than the one with him conducting.

Excellent recording.

Sarge, you should check out the Edding Quartet's recording of Op. 77 (remember the one with profile of the interesting looking man on the cover?) It has a bit of a brisker atmosphere than the Mosaiques. But similar to Mosaiques, the Edding have a great tone with strong clarity from all the voices.

I would say that Op. 77/103 is the best represented in my collection than other of Haydn's quartet opus. With Mosaiques, Smithson and now Edding Quartets.

I have six sets:

Quatuor Mosaiques
Kodaly
The Lindsays
Amadeus
Auryn
L'Achibudelli

plus the Jerusalem and Schuppanzigh's 77/1, so I'm pretty well stocked. L'Archibudelli is quite different from the others. Far swifter in the first movement of 77/1 (even faster than the Edding).

I think I'm going to alternate Haydn quartets (Mosaiques) and Martinu symphonies, this morning.  :)
