Preparing myself for Afanassiev's solo Beethoven CD by listening to his Fourth Concerto.

Disc-of-The-Year Alert: Be it known to all and sundry that the ONDINE recording of Sibelius' gnawing, gnashing, gargling Four Legends op. 22 and its sister act Pohjola's Daughter (Lemminkäinenn's female alter ego) have found their definitive recorded impersonation under the hands of Hannu Lintu and his Finnish Radio Symfoniker. In A.D 2015

Fun story about Hannu Lintu! My friend saw him conduct a concert with the Houston Symphony when, between every movement, he dashed off-stage, was gone for 30 seconds, and then dashed back onstage.

After the show, my friend met Lintu and asked him what was going on. Lintu said, "Backstage I have an assistant with a glass of water, so I take a drink of water. And I have an assistant with a lit cigarette, and I take a big drag on the cigarette. Then I come back onstage."

God, that was a mistake. Turning it off. Life is too short for this.

One would think that one assistant would suffice for both tasks.

One wonders if that was really true. A great story, in any case.

I certainly could live without these Bach and Schubert recordings, but it was a great performance of Brahms' Third!

If one assistant holds both, a contingency may arise where he must douse the cigarette in the water; and then, where is the artist?  8)  0:)
