Hello, my music-loving friends! I am listening to Beethoven. What a surprise, eh? Anyway, I am listening to his string trios.

Have a nice evening/morning/day!

How do you like that? It looks enticing; the string trios aren't the most recorded Beethoven works.

Here Symphonies Nos. 1 & 6 conducted by Osmo Vänskä:

Thanks to you! Grumiaux is one my favorite violinists, but for some reason I hadn't noticed this set.  :)

You are welcome!

I'm listening to a little of this favorite recording before bed.

... a little of this favorite recording...
[asin]B000001H00[/asin]

... as some people here might have noticed, I'm not particularly fond of Bach music played on modern instruments, but this set is excellent. Well, Misltein was generally excellent, as it's excellent his older set on EMI, too.

I own the older set but have not given it a good listen yet--something I must get to sooner than later.

I have the Archibudelli discs and I cannot figure out why these pieces aren't more popular. BTW I agree about Milstein's Bach.

Meanwhile in my player:

Beethoven op. 59/3 and 74, Quatuor Turner

Which could also go in the "Purchases today" thread. It vaulted to the top of the pile.

Yes, L'Archibudelli is a sure first option in this music. I also have the Adaskin Trio (Musica Omnia) and they are quite good, too. And I have recently ordered the newly released set of the Lendvai String Trio... Those girls look very promising.  :)

I once sang the praises of that record, and someone bought it and complained that it induced headaches.  I felt bad about that, whether I was the impetus for the purchase or not.  I'm glad it didn't cause an automobile accident....

That was probably me;  and it's not really Wourinen's fault, much less yours (or Karl's or Wanderer's,  who are the ones I specifically remember mentioning the Concerto)--it is simply something that happens to me with a lot of 20th century music. It seems to be a physical, or at least psychosomatic, reaction.   And the headache wasn't as bad as others provoked by other 20th century music:  orchestral Ligeti and anything by Stockhausen are particularly noisome in this regard.

Thread duty
both CDs from
Ravel: Complete Piano Music
Stephen Osborne, piano

Quite the reverse of headache inducing.  I don't feel qualified to compare him to other performers,  but  Osborne's playing seems to be top notch here.

BTW, Osborne's cycle is slightly more complete than some others, in that it includes the piano version of La Valse.
