North Star

Listening to the Gustav Leonhardt tribute box (Alpha). Baroque keyboard music doesn't get any better from this.

These are the majority of the discs (some were non-classical) that accompanied me during my long trek from Atlanta to Richmond, and then back this morning. [snip]

O monkey of the sock, how did you like Curlew River? Were you already familiar with it?

Listening from the last couple of days:

Loved both Monteverdi works, but the Handel did tend to drag on in spite of some great singing.  I've been informed to expect this my first time out with baroque opera, though.

Good morning, Karl.
I am familiar with Curlew, and have always been fascinated with it. I love the small instrumentation that Britten uses.

Beethoven's Violin Sonatas by Alina Ibragimova and Cedric Tiberghien. This is my first time listening to the entire set of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas.

I've also ordered a set by Aaron Berofsky and Phillip Bush, parts of which I liked when I listened them online:

I started out wanting to get this set by Wolfgang Schneiderhan and Carl Seeman on DG Trio, but they're OOP, and cost $180 on Amazon Marketplace, ten times what most DG Trio sets cost.

I guess it's going to be a Ferrabosco morning! :)

Upon previous requests I'll plan to do a little write up after, on this disc and a disc of viol music.

The Fitzwilliam Quartet's Shostakovich SQs. Disc 1. This is my first time listening to the Fitzwilliams. The only others I've heard are by the Emersons. I wouldn't say I favor one over the other. It's such good music, I wonder if these SQs will turn out to be like Mozart's Piano Concertos, pretty much damageproof no matter who plays them.
