Snow day listening.  Disc 3, Symphony 1.  Young delivers a fine First symphony.  Next up, a Bruckner symphony I actually like.

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Time to rebound from those last two dull (for me) discs.

That interpretation by Mrawinsky of the Pathétique was preceded  by the Swan Lake selections from a Karajan Berlin performance: two diametrically opposed conceptions of Tchaikovsky interpretations. The sound world of each is unique and non-transferable. The Berlin Wall was still erect and fiercely watched over.

Pleasing music:

It's well worth reading the amazon review by Joel Flegler (of Fanfare fame IIRC).

Actually, this became more than pleasing as the Music developed.

Going through Volmer's Tubin since I've received his cycle over the past few days:

Also, I'll be going through the symphonies in correct order not by the Alba volume number. Listening Symphony No. 1 in C minor. Is this an improvement over Jarvi's performance on BIS? No, absolutely not. What it is, however, is a viable and well-performed alternative view of this music, which, in itself, is worth the price of admission.

And you liked it ? I haven't heard that one. I'm interested in your opinion on Ropartz.

Symphony No.9 is a cute little number. Shortest one in ages in the perspective of this set (up to CD 8 ).

Fourth and final disc of the Kapustin/Koekkoek cycle.  Opp 47 & 96.  Similar to the third disc qualitatively.  The Kreutzer opening movement boasts some hefty, nearly overpowering lower register playing from Koekkoek, but the movement as a whole is a bit low energy.  The variations, however, are splendid, with some fun and lively and lovely playing.  The finale is nicely energetic.  Op 96 is nice, but flags a bit from time to time.  Not one of my favorite cycles, and second place out of two in the all-woman cycle sweepstakes.

Tippett: A Child of Our Time, Part Three [Tippett]....

When I first heard this work a good number of years ago now I simply did not like it. Now, however, I have changed my opinion over time. I can now appreciate the work far more than I did back then.

This was a listen designed to confirm a cull from my collection of this CD but that decision has now been reversed and it stays in my collection.

Now:

Listening to Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121. It doesn't get any better than this in music IMHO.

Disc one from the Weissenberg box.  Really short at under a half hour, this 1949 recording of a very young Weissenberg has the four works mentioned on the cover, and three Rach Preludes never before released.  The Preludes are preferable to the later recordings, and the Prokofiev and Scriabin are quite good - the Scriabin is better than expected - and the last pages of the Nocturne display some remarkably dexterous playing.  Sound is good for the age, with little noise, though some distortion is evident.
