Symphony No.2. This time not late at night so I won't doze off in a soft bit.

Because let's face it, this is quite relaxing music. Remarkably different in mood from the 1st.

Opus 76, played by Dinorah Varsi.

The last time I recorded listening to this was 4 December 2009. It's been a while.

I can at least tell you what I meant by that word "idiomatic": that each piece is different, with its own tempo, beat, melodic coloration, and needs to be played differently: that each piece has (if you will allow the borrowing of your own phrase) its own story to tell.  The clavier pieces in the Glossa set do that.  The organ pieces seem to want to tell the same story over and over again.

If anything, the organists in the Glossa don't play him like Bach!

TD
The final CD of that set, with the last two tracks being a recording of a concert performance by Gustav Leonhardt in the Oude Kerk Amsterdam on 11 October 1971, a concert given to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Sweelinck's death. At least the set ends on a musical peak.

I think that the Leonhardt's Pavana Lachrimae is the highlight of the set, and just thinking about the organ material I enjoyed very much the recitals by Bernard Winsemius and Pieter van Dijk too.

Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen

?  If it's relaxing, they're not playing it right. :(

Received a commission recently for an ensemble of this instrumental configuration.........so hopefully listening to some of its repertoire will help me to formulate some ideas in my noggin concerning the overall sonic possibilities :)

And also decided to listen to more Ligeti. The Hamburg Concerto is not my favourite of his later pieces, possibly because the complex instrumental and rhythmic layering has been toned down in comparison to others of this period like the Violin Concerto and Sippal, dobbal, nadihegedűvel. It also generally has much mellower timbral tendencies due to the concertino of horns which are featured very prominently. Nevertheless, it is nice to listen again to this piece as I haven't heard it since 2012 I think.

? It's quite sunny music, compared to some other works.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Well put, Harry. And my best wishes to you. :)

I might take the opportunity of making a fresh start right away, by ordering your favourite recording of the past year.  :D

I am glad you like this composer, I never could connect with him, sadly enough.
I will keep a keen eye on all bargains through JPC in 2017.
Be aware that many full priced CPO recording will soon go to the 7.99€ mark. That happens every year.
