[Matisse] was interested neither in fending off opposition,
nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.

I am always a little apprehensive regarding this composer, but I keep coming back to him.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Playing the 5th from this box set:

Mister Sharpe

Wish we, as a nation, weren't so trigger happy.  Shoot first, ask questions later.  And we do love to shoot.

Playing an excellent, though underrated ("unknown"?), Monteverdi recording ~

Hans Ludwig Hirsch plays a beautiful sounding organ on some tracks; others have a sensitive accompaniment of harpsichord, harp and violin.

Sound is very good.
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Disc 12, starting off with one of Bach's greatest hits.  Though I've not done any A/Bs yet, the more I've listened to this set, the more I think I probably prefer Alain's second cycle.

"l do not consider my music as atonal, but rather as non-tonal. I feel the unity of all keys. Atonal music by modern composers admits of no key at all, no feeling of any definite center." - Arnold Schoenberg

Vivaldi: Catone in Utica, Act 3 [Curtis]....

Powerful, assertive and intense music and performances that are well driven, but not frantically so. The whole experience is very invigorating and engaging. The recording has great presence and vitality which helps with the inherent drama of the work.

How is this?  (I have been following your gradual survey of this CD, and all the little-known works have piqued my curiosity.  In fact, not to make any secret of it, I have gone ahead and ordered the disc.)
