All in all though, I found this compilation very interesting, and experienced contentment as well as a sense of awe, for music and performances.

That set is part of the Documents sale at JPC.  Worth getting for eight out the ten CDs. (I didn't like the Elgar or the Delius performances,  but the rest is much better, and some is stuff you won't find elsewhere.

Vivaldi: Armida, Atto terzo [Alessandrini]....

There is nothing spectacularly dazzling about this work. However, it is still very good, solid, entertaining and engaging music that is excellently sung and played. The work and performances give much pleasure.

Les Preludes

Aligreto has sung the praises of this box recently and since his taste pretty much matches my own I decided to give it a try --- and hat tip to him. This is probably going to displace my favorite version, Solti / London SO. The drama is a bit understated (although the storm section gives Solti a hard run for his money) but this is more than compensated by a gorgeous, heart-wrenching and melifluous lyricism which at times made me think it's the first time I hear this piece properly. The orchestral texture is thin and clean, allowing the slightest details to be heard in full, which is not the case of any other recording I've heard. The winds in particular are a balm to the ear and soul. The sound is excellent. Thanks again, Aligreto, for bringing this to my attention, it's stunning.

You are very welcome my friend. I am delighted that you enjoyed it. I agree with everything that you say but my only problem with you is that you put things so much better than I do

Reichenauer: I was anxious to get a listen to this one so I have listened to the first three [relatively short] works of the six works on the disc....

Sonata in D major for 2 trumpets, timpani, cello, strings & b.c.
Concerto in B flat major for oboe, strings & b.c.
Concerto in D minor for cello, strings & b.c.

Wonderful, joyous and jubilant music in the outer movements with a contrasting serene slow movement. Very well played and recorded with wonderful orchestral textures. The ensemble play very well and attack the music with verve but not over aggressively. I am very pleased so far  8)

Curious to see if I liked this as much as I did the first few times I played it. So far the answer is yes.

This set was delivered bty the postman today. I've had the downloads for some time, but Presto had Ondine cds on offer so I decided to buy it. They sound allot better than my,somewhat, botched cd-r transfers! I had the earlier cd issue of 2 & 4. It's nice to have the proper set now, with the nice artwork. :) :) :)

... and nice music too. I've been playing them all in recent years and like Nos. 4, 5 and 6 especially.

Liszt: From CD 4, Die Ideale....

A very fine, both buoyant and poignant reading in an assertive yet lyrical performance with a wonderful sound.

Music that I have no knowledge of and a set that has long been on my List.

I finally bought the set, which was on offer at Presto. I had the downloads before and the cd of 2 & 4;but I have known the Fifth for quite a few years, from an off air cassette I made from a R3 broadcast. I like these symphonies. I have read allot of rave reviews of these symphonies in various places online, but I have noticed that opinions are more mixed here, overall. I also understand, from posts at the Unsung Composers Forum that there are some cuts in the scores used in these recordings?!! That aside,I like the sound of these symphonies. Very nationalistic, lots of heavy brass in evidence and some very beautiful nature writing. Symphony No 4 is a peach of a score with that lovely melody, sweeping strings and heavenly singing. No wonder it was so popular when it was first performed! When I first heard it,I remember I was listening in another room on cordless headphones;I thought,"Whoa! Now that's really something!"

I forgot to say that I have the box too, this one I bought before the box. At least it got a beautiful booklet with the single disc.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
