Symphony No. 2 in E major, op. 10

The first was succesfully Mendelssohnian, the second is failingly Schumannesque. The outer movements are quite similar in mood, lacking a sense of development and purpose. The most interesting movements are the second, a noble and poised dirge, and the third, an ebullient scherzo. The overall feeling is one of disconnectedness and lack of purpose. Meh.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

That would be contrary to what I think about Gade's Symphonies.

I'm communing with Sergei today; time for all seven symphonies, barring interruptions. Don't call me. Unless there's an emergency (eg: someone has found a recording of his first wife, Leni).

And, in my view, an excellent set for the endeavor!  (Listening to all seven symphonies, I mean, not having your spouse abandon you.)

 ;D Thanks, Karl, love the impetus and snap Ozawa gives the first. Much as I love numero uno it unfortunately dominates in the music hall and on the airwaves. And for the record I slipped and wrote Leni, it should be Lena.

By accident rather than design, I've reached the end of listening through 3 of my purchases from last November all at the same time. On a first listen not everything is completely amazing, but all of them have a lot that is very worthwhile and some of it is amazing. I shall look forward to getting know this music better (only some of the Barber is familiar to me).
