Ferneyhough's String Quartet No.6 - Arditti Quartet
Quote from: Mandryka on June 25, 2017, 02:39:36 AM

I listened to this recently and was bowled over by the beauty of the cello music in the opining part of the quartet.

I must confess that I do not know the music of Ferneyhough at all.

I must confess that I do not know the music of Ferneyhough at all.

Some of the most expressive string quartets I've ever heard, in my opinion. His numbered string quartets are all great, but I'm particularly fond of the Sonatas for String Quartet.

Without an orchestra, the Japanese "qualities" are so prevalent: the stillness, the silences, the calmness. It is as if time has stood still.

Am considering getting this one.
Is it less stern than a good deal of his other orchestral works?

Winding, Emil Hartmann, Pabst, Rimsky-Korsakov, Scriabin: Piano Concertos / Marshev etc. / Danacord

OK, but very typical of their times, not really essential except Scriabin, IMO.

On now. Cd 2 of this set. Actually,it's a 3cd set!!! This music just tinkles away in a delightful sort of way. Unlike some examples of ,muzak' I can think of,it doesn't feel aimless, though. (I'm not constantly looking at the track timings!) While it isn't exactly profound,it has a sense of purpose. You feel there is an intellect there. Perfect for writing, drawing, reading or just relaxing. It brings Victorian drawing rooms, waterfalls and woodland scenes to mind. In short. Lovely! :) :) :)
