I seldom listen to this, but not because I do not love it to pieces:

More LvB? Well, and why not?
"Arranged for piano and string orchestra by Vinzenz Lachner (1881)"? I'll stick to this...

I'm not saying you're at all wrong 0:)  The pianist is an acquaintance.  And, both her performance, and the tone of the accompaniment, are very fine.

Clubmedieval sing motets by Paolo da Firenze. This is a good complement to Mala Punica's recording, this ensemble have a similar knack for putting together voices and instruments, and for creating sensual intertwining lines of music. Surprisingly, Paolo da Firenze has not been well served on record, compared with Landini and Ciconia.

The tradition of adapting other composers works was a common convention in the early 18th century; adopting a piece by another composer was regarded as a sign of the highest
esteem for fellow composers. As he grew older, Bach practiced this frequently for his own works. He arranged concertos written in Köthen for other ensembles in Leipzig, adapted Weimar cantatas to suit Leipzig conditions, and transformed chamber music into orchestral music (and vice versa). This CD by the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra of Hamburg features five works by Johann Sebastian Bach, recorded in orchestral arrangements specially created by Jörg Jacobi, as well as the presumed original version of the Overture in B minor (BWV 1067) in a reconstruction by Werner Breig.

Die Schöpfung. Soloists are Judith Blegen, Alexander Young and Simon Estes. Recorded in 1966 in Avery Fisher Hall. I suppose that last bit of info explains the overbright, aurally tiring, two-dimensional sound. It may also contribute to make the soprano sound so unpleasant (although she sings very well). Bass Simon Estes is the best element here. Bernstein conducts forcefully, but doesn't seem to be able to settle on a general pace that is at once conversational and forward-moving. He alternates between speedily dynamic (the big choruses) and mawkish, indulgent (duets and some arias and, frustratingly, some choruses codas). He is an interesting, enthusiastic but unconvincing leader.

Just started it to check that the sound quality was alright, but the piece drew me in...

Schoenberg: Verklarte Nacht
Quatuor Ebène

A little indulgent and exaggerated for my taste, but maybe that's acceptable in this piece.

A second listen to this recent purchase.  Vibrant playing by this group.  Very well recorded; lifelike and immediate.

Good day, HIPster!

I had to pause last evening, but that is not a reflection on the music. Listening to the disc now, I can only admire the beauty of the music, and of the performances. The singing (by an all-women quintet) is excellent, and the continuo provided by a chitarrone and organ complements the voices perfectly. An extremely delightful disc.
