How are you enjoying Norgard's music, Karlo? He's still a composer I have yet to connect with.
It's a long time since I last listened to any of it, John. There are interesting and exciting textures and sonorities but on the whole I don't find it that gripping, either.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Let a chap know!

I quite liked it. It won't snag that last spot on my top 10 but it's the best thing by Andriessen I've heard. I think anyone sympathetic to minimilism, broadly construed, would like it. You listening Monkey Greg? Or the Ghost. Well, it's worth anyone's time but I know a couple who won't like it ...

In one place a familiar tune, slightly dismembered, gets tossed about, but I cannot place it.

Thanks for the pointer

It's a splendid disc - great program and playing. I can't imagine anyone interested in modern string quartets disliking it.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor" from this CD:

Really beuatiful sounds from Curzon's piano, with a taut but naturally flowing orchestral support from Boulez and his BBC band. A remarkable perfromance.
