Beethoven: Missa Solemnis [von Karajan]....

The choral singing and the orchestral playing are powerful, glorious and very fine. The soloists sing radiantly and are very empathetic with the work. The interpretation is assertive and buoyant and almost relentless, yet it is wonderfully devotional. This is a very fine performance.

I didn't know that German audio company Clear Audio was in the LP business (do they do their own remastering?). This LP sounds wonderful, and of course Richter's playing is in a class of its own. Very pricey ($45), but I guess it's worth it.

And no doubt your new TT will do the new edition great justice  ;)

Beethoven's Pastoral:

The first recording of the Pastoral l ever owned, about forty years ago. Not as sublime as Karl Böhm with the VPO, but having Lothar Koch playing the oboe solos almost ( for me ) makes up the difference.

I haven't done a lot of Beethoven symphony comparisons, but I really enjoy this HvK cycle.

That has always been my reference recording of the work, and it was through the LP that I was introduced to it.

I've never owned the entire cycle. l had LPs of 5&6, and the Ninth. CDs of 3&4. I'm not sure I've ever even heard the remaining symphonies from the '63 cycle ( l probably should for Koch's playing if nothing else ).

Another excuse for spending time on YouTube, l suppose.  :D

If you like HvK (which I do), then you should definitely hear the rest of this cycle. You'll enjoy it I imagine.

I noticed you've just bought a lot of stuff which I like, the Vissé, the Asperen and the Pérès.

Must be entirely coincidental....  :D

This is a very fine and engaging work and I like its harmonies. Wonderful singing from the choir also.

Me too, circa 1965. My best friend in high school owned it. It was a staple of our after school listening sessions.

If this is the 60s cycle, the Pastoral is the one glaring disappointment.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Yep, this is the 60s cycle. Truth be told, I'm more in the Szell/Cleveland camp than anything. His cycle is still my preference in these symphonies. I'm sure Sarge would have no objections with this opinion. :)
