Thanks to Andre I discovered this fine set. What do you think of it?
I like it--a new name to me. I wish all of the recordings were in stereo, though.

Kontrapunctus

Another new name to me--I like it very much. While parts are quite abrasive, it's lyrical and melodic overall.

Two grandiloquent quartets. The 1st is broadly lyrical, with some passages inspired by Kabardinian themes (as the 2nd one by Prokofiev). The 2nd is more aggresive. Both are instantly enjoyable.

Don't worry, you're not alone in liking Shostakovich's 12th. I really enjoy it as well and think it doesn't deserve the bad reputation it has.

I think it suffered from the official program DSCH supplied for it, especially as it came between two symphonies that show the composer at his most subversive.

Schnabel's Piano Sonata played by Irmela Roelcke and onto the first of Beethoven's Quasi Una Fantasias, Op. 27/1 from Wilhelm Kempff's mono cycle. I listened to lots of Russell Sherman these last few weeks, hearing Kempff is like a palate cleansing  :D

Symphony no 1

Spectacular performance from Haitink. Spectacular sound from the Leeds Town Hall recording. Both interpretations are much more involved and involving than Rattle/CBSO.

Having finished...I thought the performance quite good, and suggest getting it if you see it at a newsstand.
I am not sure, but US distribution seems about a month behind the UK, so the May issue might already be out there.

Haitink is my overall favorite recording of the Walton. The movements 1 and 3 are more expansive than in other performances I know. It's one of the few recordings where I feel sheer thrill. The timpani sound with such energy. Other renditions often fail to achieve it.

Variations on a Folksong from Hardanger

I don't recall having listened to this work before. And what a magical piece it is! Tveitt conjures up a work from other world, the style of this piece is so singular that it's difficult to associate it with something else. I didn't feel any dull moment in its 30 minutes of length. There were some passages that moved me, of sheer spell. A fantastic piece.

A gorgeous, haunting work. This is also an instance where the Nimbus engineering doesn't drown out the soloist/orchestra in reverb. Everything sounds just right and balanced.

A second listen to Ansermet's Beethoven 1. Much as i love both the conductor and the work I dont think I'd heard this recording before, but immediately rank it as one of the best old school versions.

Thanks to whoever it was upthread who gave me the itch to play this today.

I took a listen - it certainly sounds gnarly but I'll be curious what you think after comparing.
The entire suite sounds like that to me (from the samples) so I'd assume it is intentional and she is playing in unequal temperament for whatever reason. I didn't hear anything that sounded like a mistake.

Back in the saddle listening to music again:

A beautiful production in clear sound.

Yes, very good. There's quite a contrast between the Missa Salutaris and the Missa Ave Sanctissima I think, I'm going to try to investigate what's going on there later. The balance is fabulous because, despite the presence of a countertenor, it's not dominated by the upper voices, and the barytone isn't at all muddy. The approach is modal, with a high priority given to  each singer freely expressing his music, the the resulting textures and chords in the ensemble is very successful I'd say, and (something which is important to me) very different from the textures and harmonies we've come to expect in music from the c17 and c18 - it's not « baroqued up ».

Cheers Bri, there's clearly something wrong with my copy.
