Sonata in A major KV 331 (containing perhaps the finest set of variations ever composed)

I like the sound of that even if I'm not sure I agree with it. :)

This is well-trodden territory and the list is formidable. Lurking are sets of variations by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Schubert, Chopin...to name a few...

In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Haydn's Schöpfung by Dorati et al. Kurt Moll, ya'll!  Damn.

There's an Originals of this, but that's not the one I got; the Originals edition looks like it might not include Laszlo Heltay's Salve Regina (w/Arleen Auger, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, etc), which does come on the Decca Double pictured above, which I got for like $3.

Still looking forward to McCreesh HIP/English version.

I never thought highly of 70 until this recording. And Fey injects the finale of La chasse with so much spunk it's hard to resist.

An excellent album, Greg, good call!

Shostakovitch "the Dance Album" (Chailly)
Cheryomushki / The Bolt / The Gadfly

really great stuff, thoroughly enjoyed it !!!

+1, I really liked this too; I got mine as part of that red/white CONCERTOS ETC Decca box set.  I think one GMGer even listed THE DANCE ALBUM as a personal essential "desert island" disc.  Not bad for shipbuilding!

I listened to the Ninth Symphony: I know that Schoenberg said David Diamond could become the American Bruckner, but Mennin makes a case here that the title might belong to him!

Good evening everyone!

Karlo has been strongly recommending this piece to me for a while:

Enescu's 3rd violin sonata. Absolutely incredible piece, really enjoyed it all. The dialogue and equal importance between instruments is fantastic. :)

Outstanding, Ilaria! Let me know afterwards what you think!

Thanks, Karl. It was the first time I listened to Schuman's music and I extremely liked it! What a beautiful symphony, it has a very intense, dark atmosphere that really captures you, especially in the slowest sections; absolutely impressive. Great orchestration, the solo passages of the instruments are enchanting. I will provably look for more Schuman. :D

Of potential interest to the GMG public: MusicWeb will unveil its redesigned look tomorrow morning! There won't be any enormous changes to the site architecture, but:

  • that wacky '90s pink-and-yellow color scheme will be gone
  • colors used in the text will be simplified
  • review pages will be shorter and require less scrolling
  • Times New Roman will be banished
I've seen some previews and it's a major improvement.

Enescu's 3rd violin sonata. Absolutely incredible piece, really enjoyed it all. The dialogue and equal importance between instruments is fantastic. :)

The music of Enescu has not been sufficiently appreciated beyond the Romanian Rhapsodies.

I find that he was one of the major 20th-Century composers: take a listen to the originality of the 3 symphonies, especially the Third Symphony, which takes Schoenberg at his word that great music was still possible in C major.
