Thread duty:
Bach: The Six Partitas
Andras Schiff, piano

It struck me as I typed the above that Schiff didn't do the Toccatas (or at least,  if he did they're not included in this set).  But despite that glaring omission,  I'm enjoying this set very much.

A Tween girl sleepover in my house this evening drove me to listen to some calm music piped through my Beyers.  I haven't listened to this disc for years (I have the original issue).  Just lovely.

HAYDN:     Three Quartets opus 74            / Kocian Quartet

A very beautiful version, full of energy and dynamic, but also deep and eloquent in the slow movements: the sublime Andante Graciozo of the opus 74/2 is perhaps the great moment of this CD.

Thanks Q!  Seems safe to say that you like the Moroney.  ;D  Many others do as well. . .

It does seem quite the bargain at that price too. . .

[re: Bach harpsichord concertos by Moroney et all]

Yup, I've seen many very positive responses to that set here.... Strongly recommended! :)

This morning:

The disc includes readings of the bible texts preceding each lamentation. The spoken word is more often found on French discs ... I guess this reflects the way the music was originally performed, but I find it distracting - I had to figure out how to program the disc player to play just the tracks with the music, haven't done that in years!  :o I also means actual playing time is pretty short, it's a good thing this was a bargain at BRO...

Anyway, the music itself and the singing is wonderful. :)

First listen: Gaspard de la Nuit- wow, this is exceptional and is heads and shoulders above any other single version I've come across.

Which other versions are you familiar with?

Now playing:

I know it's not fashionable to like Rogé around here, but I do.

Tone, technique, and -- most of all -- musicality.

Most versions- I used to play Gaspard some years ago, and I'm always on the lookout for good interpretations.

A Beethoven 2nd with the Vienna SO and "corrected tempos", according to the code that Harke de Roos cracked. Turns out, it's 46+ minute symphony!

In any case, a rather endearing performance. To be released on Gramola.

Usually when I'm considering buying a fairly "complete" set of Debussy solo piano works, I put this one on and forget about anyone else.

Today´s listening:

J S Bach:  Clavierübung  I (six partitas)
James Weaver  harpsichord (restored Dulcken harpsichord)
Smithsonian Institute double LP ca. 1975

[etc]

Premont - thanks for those detailed reviews. Now that I've gotten those LPs out of my parents' basement and have cleaned them up a bit, I look forward to listening with your comments in mind.

I like this set quite a lot.  Well-played and very enjoyable.

I particularly enjoyed the violin concerto BWV 1052R. Wallfish recorded another version on Virgin (including some extra reconstructions).  :)
