Shostakovich: Symphony No. 13 In Bb Minor, Op. 113

Listening to some Shostakovich this evening - another composer who, depending on mood, I could call a favourite. I listened to Sanderlings Symphony No. 1 and 6 first - good performance, the orchestra were certainly up to the challenge. I was a bit disappointed by Sanderlings Sibelius recordings but his Shostakovich seems like it will be much better. Currently Im playing Barshais Symphony No. 13 - I struggle to like Shostakovich's late symphonies, im not really sure why as I love his first 12. I will listen to as much of this Symphony as I am able to - at the moment Im thinking it not too bad :):

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

There's something about late Poulenc for me: at first it sounds trivial and superficial, then suddenly it doesn't.

I absolutely get the same sense.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I've never heard anything beyond snippets of some of his pieces, and have always been intrigued by his chantefable "Aucassin & Nicolette", which appeared on the Timpani label a couple of years ago. May I ask you what your impressions are? Thanks...

If you are referring to what was on the present CD, you already know my thoughts. I have the Timpani disc somewhere in the que to be listen too, but if the Marco Polo disc is a fair display of what he is capable of, I suspect that , Aucassin and Nicolette will be worth the time and effort. However I had this CD as a present, but I rarely like this kind of vocal compositions, so I will see. The instrumental scoring though, is superb.

Oops, that reminds me of the fact that this box is still awaiting a listening. I am so behind with all, but I will get to it later this year. Presently going through my backlog. Want to be ready with them this year. Including the new ones I ordered last week, a mere 15 CD'S. Peanuts :laugh:

Glad to be of help, mijn vriend!  In fact, I have long meant to revisit this cycle, so I am playing a sort of catch-up, myself  0:)

One of the best disks of Bach's organ trio sonatas released the last years:

A miracle of balance and color.

IMO, this disk is better than Alard's two volumes of the Clavier-Übung released after these trio sonatas.

This one and his violin sonatas (with Fernandez on the label Flora) are totally mandatory. Just saying.  :)
