This symphony invariably inspires for me thoughts of home, Eastman School, Highland Park, lilacs, Lake Ontario - all of which it has absolutely nothing to do with!   Attn: Ken B. - VT disliked it, saying "it is as standardized in expression as it is eclectic in style. Not a surprise from beginning to end, nor any adventure."  No, not an adventure, but don't need one today, thanks.  (But was good enough for Goldsmith to rip-off as credit music for Alien!  The composer was unhappy about it, chose not to pursue legal recourse).

Holmboe's Piano Concerto arrived on my doorstep this morning.

[asin]B00078JW0Y[/asin]

EDIT: This is, indeed, as a review of the premiere said, a mix of Bartok with something rather lyrical in the first movement (which is not necessarily where you'd expect to find it). This was in 1941, so before Bartok's third concerto was written.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Walter Piston's hyper-American-sounding Violin Concerto No. 1, Spotify. It reminds me a lot of Borodin's 2nd symphony (which, oddly enough, sounds American to me).
[asin]B00000DHT6[/asin]

Why haven't I bothered trying Spotify before?? I love it. I have a 30-day free trial for the premium (no ads) and since I'm a student (or, will be in a few weeks), I can get the student discount for $4.99 a month! I have my good speakers attached wireless-ly using my AirPort Express router and the Spotify app I downloaded is able to stream to the router. No more listening to YouTube with laptop speakers for new things, or downloading the mp3 from YouTube so I can play it through iTunes and use the good speakers.

EDIT: Finished Korngold VC, now finally listening to Bruckner 7! Then maybe Lontano :).

Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Just chillin' with Martinu arabesques arranged for accordion and cello.

Are you familiar with Ksenija Sidorova? I think that's her name. Anyway, Champs Hill Records has a bona fide Accordion Babe, and wow can she play.

Wow, the efect of using a harpsichord instead of a piano is much stronger than I thought. :o
It more clearly distances the music from the Classical and Romantic era  it produces a more astranged, eery, and by consequence modernistic feel. My wife just walked in a described it as "a harpsichord on steroids".... ::)  :)

Dussek, Jan (1760-1812) - Fortepiano Works w/ Alena Hönigová playing a restored Broadwood FP (original or restoration dates not provided) - the disc comes in a 'wallet foldout' w/ the front cover art on the left; booklet art in the middle; and the pianist on the right - I like the piano and the performances although a little reverberant - I cannot find a single review on the web, so not sure how others might feel about the disc - but complements my other keyboard recordings by this composer and adds another fortepiano disc to my collection.  Dave :)
