The Linde-Consort, conducted by Hans Martin Linde. Specifically this EMI Classics Reflexe set (apparently the Virgin set has some digital glitches):

And then tied Suzuki (2nd version) and Pickett (a kind of personal superstition  :D):

:)
Very nice, Gordo!   :)

Conor, I also share your enthusiasm for the first Pinnock Brandenburg set.  I have yet to check out Suzuki's 2nd set - listed by Gordo - but his first version left me cold.  Philip Pickett's set is excellent and I am in full alignment with Gordo there!  Ditto for the Linde Consort set.

If I may (I know that you didn't ask me  ;D), I also really like the following ~

Les Concert des Nations/Savall

Akademie fur alte Musik Berlin
[asin]B0031B7ES6[/asin]

I really need to check out Suzuki's 2nd set!  8)

Seeing an older woman on the cover, I just sort of assumed Ms Fialkowska's Schubert would be of the lovely, dainty type.  Nope.  Her style is just a bit quick, just a bit tense (well, more than a bit, at least in places), with clear, clean playing that manages to sound both a bit hard edged and attractive.  At times, as in the Menuetto of D894, she can be downright assertive, though it works in her conception.  A few moments of minor congestion aside, Fialkowska plays with admirable clarity and unyielding but not overpowering forward momentum.  The one trait that is missing is effortless lyricism.  It's not that the playing is rough or ugly or severe, it's just that it lacks a certain singing quality.  This is more evident in D664, which in my favored versions, sings.  D894 isn't as big in scale and as deep as my preferred versions, but it works superbly here.  Fialkowska is a serious artist and plays this serious music in a serious fashion.  I noticed that she has recorded some other rep that intrigues me, including some Liszt.  I suspect she might do rather well in Liszt.  I will probably have to find out.

Hey HIPster thanks for your reply :). I have a couple of Savall's Bach recordings already (Viola Da Gamba & Harpsichord sonatas and the Musical Offering) so that recording is a big temptation. The HM title looks excellent too!.
Im feeling very enthusiastic about Bach again after not listening to him much for a few years so I may be expanding my collection soon.
Thanks again for your input ;D

No doubt, Dave, I prefer his second version... Anyway, it should be noticed that the tempi chosen by Suzuki are quite moderate, even slow compared to ensembles like I Barocchisti (Fasolis), Musica Florea (both of them almost hectic), or the versions you mention (Concerto Italiano and the Akademie für alte Musik Berlin).  :)

It's great to see your reenchantment with Bach, Conor, after your long hiatus here the last year.  :)

Thanks for that Gordo :D - I will admit I wasn't sure I was actually going to listen to Classical Music any more after last year :o.
Good to be enjoying classical again - I have a lot to explore in this genre and even with Bach theres a lot I want to listen to.

Vieuxtemps: Violin Concerto No 4                   Hilary Hahn/The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen/Järvi

A first listen! I very much enjoyed this concerto, and realize that I am completely unfamiliar with Vieuxtemps's works. Any recommendations? Are Misha Keylin's recordings on Naxos the way to go?

Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex                Sadler's Wells Opera Chorus/Royal PO/Colin Davis       [1961]

A very interesting piece. The narration (Ralph Richardson) mixed with the voices of the chorus and the music create a powerful performance. Very theatrical!
