Isn't this recording of Das Lied rather boxy and recessed? Using headphones you feel what I mean

Dunno.  I am listening to the 5th, and not using earphones.

Heard some interesting things about this recording, in particular, of Zinman's cycle.  Its clarity (sound and approach) is remarkable, refreshing.  Wouldn't be my first choice for the 4th, BUT I'm enjoying it and for anyone hesitant to approach Mahler it's specially recommendable as a getting-to-know him first listen.  I met the conductor, many years ago...in a galaxy far, far away...

I have also really enjoyed the Zinman cycle quite a bit. I am still digging into it. Enchanting!

Yes, for completeness Meyerson is to be preferred to Stella. But I still find Leonhardt´s and Alessandrini´s single Böhm-CDs unsurpassed.

Concerning the organ works the single CD by Christiaan Teeuwsen (Naxos) isn´t bad either.

I agree with you about all of this (apart from my slight preference for Leonhardt's Böhm on Teldec, at least when he uses harpsichord.) One other harpsichord recording I've been enjoying, quite distinctive, is Robert Woolley's. If Vartolo were to play Böhm it might sound a bit like Woolley.

Elgar: Enigma Variations            London SO/ C Davis

This piece (which I never listened to much in my past) is gaining prominence in my household (especially with my wife). Lovely work with themes that definitely settle in one's mind!

Weber: Overture Oberon               Oct 13, 1940
Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen           Schey            Nov 23, 1939
Mahler: Symphony No 5 - Adagietto          May 1926

RCO/Mengelberg

I'm having a love affair with historical recordings. I am very impressed with these older RCO recordings with Mengelberg at the helm. Sure the sound is a bit muted, but it is transferred at a very high quality. I couldn't quite believe how good the 1926 Adagietto sounded!

Mahler: Symphony No 1                Chicago SO/Boulez

After having had several encounters with Boulez's rendition of Das klagende Lied I simply had to start to listen to his other Mahler recordings. His "Titan" is indeed both impressive and powerful!

One of the most wonderful disks I've heard in the last few months.  Wish we could find more of his work in some archive somewhere...

Disc-of-The-Year Alert: Be it known to all and sundry that the ONDINE recording of Sibelius' gnawing, gnashing, gargling Four Legends op. 22 and its sister act Pohjola's Daughter (Lemminkäinenn's female alter ego) have found their definitive recorded impersonation under the hands of Hannu Lintu and his Finnish Radio Symfoniker. A couple of new purchases that have been in heavy rotation ~

Corelli/Modo Antiquo
[asin]B00F00A8TS[/asin]

Couperin/Julliard Baroque
[asin]B00U2OT06Y[/asin]

Both very enjoyable.

The Corelli is now my top pick for these works; the addition of the woodwinds makes for an engaging performance.

In their debut recording, Julliard Baroque plays very well, though I wish there was just a bit more oomph in their delivery.  Still, I like this one quite a lot.

Listening to Le Tombeau de Couperin. This Ravel series from Ozawa is some of his finest conducting IMHO.

Lintu's Lemminkainen and Pohjola's Daughter are certainly fine, Andre. Very impressive performances, but I still love Segerstam's Lemminkainen and with Pohjola's Daughter I could go with either Segerstam or Vanska here with Berglund coming in third place.
