Just revisiting these two works (yesterday & today) in meditation mode whilst
watching the outside view, and listening to the rain intermittently pitter patter down.

It has been a wet & gloomy, lazy week off
work.....but it has been a week OFF work  ;)

Bonnal: Streichquartette Nr.1 & 2 - Le Quatuor Debussy.

I'm loathe to say that these works remind me a little of Ravel, because I feel they can stand on their own. However I believe that's a reasonably fair way to describe them.
"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

This is a fairly entertaining, and very colorful, CD of new music.

The mood/color Garrop uses to capture various Greek mythological episodes is actually pretty spot-on. Don't mess with Medusa :)

Some Lute music to calm my nerves and close the listening day. New acquisition. From the SEON box.

I am a bit off Pluhar, she is always messing with the scores, adding things, and taking things out. Rial I like but not always. Blazikova of course I know from the Suzuki Bach cantates series, also a soprano that can go terribly wrong, but most of the time has enough quality in her voice to charm and delight. So how is this one. Rial her vibrato for instance?

I don't quite know why, but after an hour of Stacy Garrop's musical language, putting on Maurice Ravel's string quartet feels like the most wonderful, refreshing thing. Like lying down for a nap after a hot afternoon.

I enjoy what I've heard so far by Pluhar - the Purcell I found somewhat less interesting than other discs such as the Monteverdi Teatro d'Amore or Via Crucis (guess those two are my favourites). Rial's singing I love, she can do no wrong for me (does she ever apply too much vibrato? really? no need to start a fight over this, tastes differ, but if you can point to me to a piece where you think she does, please tell me and I'll re-listen). Blaziková is mostly new to me, but she's as charming as Rial here, I feel. And most of the charts seem quite reduced ... obviously there's some of that nutty baroque trumpet, but little drumming and fully-fledged "swinging" here.

I have the Cavalli double disc by Alarcon lined-up too - will be interesting to compare, I'm sure!

Of course not we will not fight over this, unless you want to?
I heard recently a sampler on which she sang something, I forgot what, but I was surprised about the vibrato, I will try to find which disc that was. And as you say tastes differ, and good that is!
I am sure what you have of Rial is all good. I am simply quickly put off by added vibrato. Still I find her a good singer.

Antoine Busnois : Worthy of the immortal gods, died #OnThisDay 1492

On this day in 1492, Antoine Busnois died.  He was a Netherlandish composer and poet of the early Renaissance Burgundian School. While also noted as a composer of motets and other sacred music, he was one of the most renowned 15th-century composers of secular chansons. He was the leading figure of the late Burgundian school after the death of Guillaume Dufay.

Which are sadly neglected by recording artists.

Second disc of today, a major disaster from the SEON box.

http://walboi.blogspot.nl/2015/11/monteverdi-claudio-1567-1643-madrigali.html?spref=tw

Totally accurate,  although I was so put off by the performance I didn't even notice the sonics.

But that CD is the worst of the lot, at least so far.  Which reminds me.

CD 25 of the SEON box
Kuijkens et al performing F. Couperin, the Apotheosis of Lully and three sonates d'chambre.  Last of a series of five CDs of this composer by these performers.
Seriously good stuff, almost worth getting the box for this group alone.

Agreed.  Joshua Rifkin devoted a recording to them, which as far as I can tell has never beeen transferred to CD from the vinyl.

Otherwise, they appear on some anthologies of Renassance music.

The new erato

Very fine disc of a work I don't know too well:

In the LP era I owned the Rifkin recording and transferred it to CD myself. With a rather satisfying result. But the recording contains only a fraction of his secular works.
