CD 1

EDIT: I couldn´t disagree more with the reviewer at AllMusic who mops the floor with this set. He misses the point entirely: back then people were not writing music for someone to technically and sonically dissect every inch of it, but for other people to enjoy it, and enjoy it mostly in social circumstances. They frequently wrote music specifically for amateur performers (which might very well be the case here --- where I agree with the said reviewer is in that, given Spada´s extensive research on, and knowledge of, Clementi´s music the liner notes are lamentably uninformative) or aimed at the generic public of music-loving people who just wanted to have something to play with relatives and friends in an informal, domestic setting. To shatter the earth with their music, to challenge one´s worldview and beliefs, or to transpose their own neurosis in music was inconceivable for them as it was for the public at large. These are light, unassuming, tuneful works with occasional and brief tinges of melancholy: to expect anything more of them and to fault them for not delivering is widely off the mark.

Halfway through CD 2. Marvelous.

A live recording of a performance from Glyndebourne, with fantastic performances, from three of my favourite singers (Dawn Upshaw, David Daniels and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson), especially Daniels and Hunt Lieberson who are both quite sublime, William Christie presides over a superb performance.

My favorite David Daniels is this:

Glorious singing and performing from everyone involved. Are you familiar wiht it?

Yes I have that one too. Daniels is superb, but I'm less taken with Bartoli, a singer I've never taken to.

I have most of Daniels's recital discs too, and have heard him live many times in London. He is one of my all time favourite singers, with a beautiful voice allied to a gift for communication which is vouchsafed to just a few,

And you won't be disappointed. Like many live events, the performance grows in stature as it goes along. I can only imagine what it was like to be there.

Andrei my friend I disagree with you about this set. It is probably one of the worst examples if it comes to Clementi's music. First of all the sound is below par. I seldom heard such a disaster if it comes to sound. Interpretation is not much above amateur level, despite the fact that these are professional performers. I have listen trice to the whole set, and gave up. It should never have been released. They do not deliver, not even as unassuming tuneful works.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Well. I am not even a below amateur-ish violinist / pianist, let alone sound engineer. The very moment I will be able to play "For He´s A Jolly Good Fellow" on the violin, or engineer "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on a home recording microphone I will criticize any playing / recording. Until then, I will keep respecting the work of any professional musician. If you think that Clementi´s piano and violin sonatas were played better in his own times, be my guest --- I don´t.  :D

I did a lot of recording in my time, so I assume I know a thing or two about that. My technical/musical background is enough to know when musicians play good or bad, so apart from the fact if you like an interpretation or not, to my knowledge this release is far from good. I respect professionalism and musicians that strive for perfection, again, this is not the case with this release. I do not know if Clementi's works were badly performed in his time, if yes, that is a shame, for I find these works interesting enough.
So I acknowledge the music as genial enough but deplore this release.
If I can find the email back from Spada which I received after burning down this release I will sent it to you, its quite revealing.
