A holiday in Norway, so I am making dents in some box sets that have been laying dormant for too long.

From the Archive cube; I have never heard this music or disc before:

Fine music and musicmaking.

Hey New Erato - I have that CD and enjoy; own about 10 discs of Il Boemo's music - we actually have a thread HERE - just one page and no activity in 6 years!  The last post was from me - if interested, bring it TTT is see if any others might be stimulated?  His music is well composed and enjoyable IMO - Dave :)

Alessandro Marangoni is asked to sing along on track 3. His singing voice can be described - with frankly chilling accuracy - as "Kermit the Frog impersonating Vito Corleone".

To kill time before I leave work, a quick trial of Camillo Togni's Tre Fantasie Scherzose.

Not too inspired or interesting, even though Togni studied piano with ABM and composition with Casella. The best of the fantasies is No. 2 - but it sounds like a deliberately obscured, de-melodized version of Charlie Chaplin's song "Smile", with the harmonies and the blurry outline of the theme intact, but the emotions sucked out, since the original is apparently embarrassing (to Togni) in its sincerity. Composed in 1967 but sounds like 1867.

ending the day with gorgeous Charpentier now:

Es wollt ein meydlein grasen gan:
Fick mich, lieber Peter!
Und do die roten röslein stan:
Fick mich, lieber Peter!
Fick mich mehr, du hast dein ehr.
Kannstu nit, ich wills dich lern.
Fick mich, lieber Peter!

Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony [Litton]....

This is a performance that I can recommend; a strong, robust and assertive performance.

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Brahms: 4 Balladen, Op.10 - Michelangeli.

"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Stravinsky: Le Sacre du printemps. On Youtube, a radio relay of the 50th anniversary performance by the LSO under Monteux in 1963. It's a slow, methodical performance, not so much savage as ritualistic. A YT comment mentions that student orchestras today play this better than what is on offer here. I agree. But they wouldn't be playing it under Monteux.

Listening to Three Russian Songs. This is my third time in a row listening to this work. 8)

I mean, obviously Christine Schäfer is amazing and everyone knows that. But also Eric Schneider is actually a really good accompanist. I'm going to check out his Müllerin with Goerne next (though I don't ordinarily like baritone much in that cycle).

Another run of this:

It is a pretty disc.
I find the motets musically more impressive than the mass, which is inconveniently cut in two - the first two movements are at beginning of the disc and the last two at the end...

I can't believe the ever increasing pace in which my Early Music collection is expanding! ???
Wouldn't have imagined that when I started listening to classical music 25 years ago - it seemed  just stuffy and boring... ::

And now it is WE that are stuffy and boring while the music is exciting!  Time flies......
