Stenhammar: Lodolezzi Sings - Suite Op. 39....

I was very taken with this piece; I think this is a wonderful work.

Symphony 2 again:

Great stuff! What do you think of Magnard so far? That Ossonce set you're listening to is my favorite and I prefer it to the Sanderling on BIS for the simple fact that Ossonce gets more atmospheric readings and he kind of slows things down a bit to let you hear all of those beautiful sonorities.

Thanks Que, yes, this overload bothered me too much, it makes the music of Galuppi sound to big for its trousers. :)

It is a nice set all the same.... love those Callido organs. :)

Brilliant should hire the German sound ingeneers from DIVOX ! :o   Now, they how to make a proper sounding organ recording..... 8)

Love his chamber music, and very much like what I've heard of his symphonies. Although I haven't heard any other recordings, I find much to agree with in your impressions of the Ossonce set.

Maybe I misunderstand you but Sanderling's are the slower performances (only in one movement out of sixteen is Ossonce faster). In any case, and to my ears, Sanderling wins the race by a mile...even though he's slower  ;D  Glad to have Ossonce in my collection too, though, for the contrast. Good to have alternate performances of music I love.

Symphony #1

Sanderling    10:27  9:44  4:02  9:07
Ossonce        10:03  9:04  3:37  8:23

Symphony #2

Sanderling    11:11  5:58  15:11  9:18
Ossonce         9:59   5:26  12:11  8:28

Symphony #3

Sanderling   15:14  6:29  11:44  10:33
Ossonce       12:23  6:08    8:21  10:41

Symphony #4

Sanderling    12:06  5:41  13:37  8:32

Currently listening to the Shostakovich 8th Sym from Boston with Nelsons. The 5th sym was excellent and the 8th is the tough listen I hoped it would be. Though the balls to the wall aspects are well levened with expressive repose where appropriate.

I prefer...SURPRISE...the Ossance. :)  But I agree - this is music that should be heard more often than it is. It is quite compelling....
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks for clearing up my own confusion. ;) I still prefer Ossonce at the end of day even if his performances are faster. ;D
