Sometime I'll have to be around for a terrier for awhile and see if I can handle it. :)

Make sure it's the real thing, not a terrier conversion. They stick wires through the cheeks... sometimes they yowl a bit... ;)

We have no pets because we travel a lot and have a lot of breakable objets d'art.

My son has a wife and 2 cats--no children. After meeting the cats for the first time, I thought they were mysterious and beautiful. After seeing them for the second time, I am disillusioned. They stare at you, but if you play or talk to them, they just walk away. They don't know their names and don't seem to care about people at all. Boring.

I was never a dog lover, but I recently visited my brother who owns two Shar Pei's. One was in the hospital, after being hit by a car; the other one, Elmo, was old, blind and totally fixated on my brother. He barked and sobbed if he couldn't find his master. I tried to bribe him to relate to me by putting chicken grease on my fingers and holding them under his nose. It worked! That night he put his head on my lap.

Verdict: dogs, because they're more interested in people

Cats are very independent-thinking, but they can be affectionate.  Maybe they just don't like you after only two visits.  It's taken my daughter's cat almost a year to warm up to me, so give it time.

I like both, but I prefer cats. Dogs are cuddly and playful and all, but street dogs are a pain in the ass. I hate running into dogs and fearing they will bite me and whatever.
Orgullosamente diletante.

If a dog ever starts chewing into you, go for the legs - very sensitive and vulnerable.

Really? Good to know!

Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats, but some cats, like this one, are majestically beautiful!

My parents love Spring Spaniels, growing up that's the only breed we'd have! :)  They are adorable but very drooly. ;D

And they shed like tumble weeds! But they are very people oriented and are great with children. We had one for 14 years.

I don't see the kitties being that affectionate to my son and his wife, either, except that one of them will let himself be held. Unfortunately, we live out of state and don't hang out with the cats very often.

I do dislike dogs who growl, jump on you, sniff and lick you (otherwise known as "just being friendly"). My brother's dog Elmo, being old and blind, actually acted more like a cat.

I love both, but I don't have time to properly care for a dog, so I have cats:

Shug, an 18 year old diluted tortoiseshell DSH, mistress of the house:

Winston, a 7 year old sealpoint bicolor Ragdoll:

and finally, Enzo, a 1 year old black & white Persian:

One of the few TV shows I watch is "The Dog Whisperer", with Cesar Millan.  That and "Dogs 101".  Both very cool and educational shows (if you like dogs).  :)

To put it another way: they have lower standards!

I like cats, because they are quieter and less smelly. That's how I judge people too.

There were 2 cats at my house until a few years ago - owned by my wife before she and I got married.  It was cat hair city at the house most of the time.  While they were still around, we got a Dachshund puppy and he managed to live with the cats peacefully.  After both cats had passed on, we adopted two more doxies through the Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue where my wife works as a volunteer - transporting doxies from CT to NJ or vice versa.

I like dogs a whole lot more than do cats, even if they need a bit more attention ...

I put cats in the same category as children; they're fine as long as they're someone else's... :P

The Cats are winning.  My cat, a breedless Woots, has gone into Tuna Meltdown what with such purfect results coming in.

I'm definitely more of a dog lover. Dogs are the only pets my family ever owned, but many years ago we had a cat that very sweet, but she got sick and we had to put her down. The only dogs I had growing up were dachshunds, but my last dachshund of 13 years died last year, which is never an easy thing to deal with since she's really been such a loyal companion. I have another dog now that I've had for two years and she's some kind of terrier mix. She's a handful sometimes, but, overall, she's a good dog. Very sweet and humble, but quite playful. I love her and think about her a lot.
