I abhor cats. Vile little bastards they are.

For 15 years (until 2 years ago when the last of them passed) we had 6 Aberdeen (Scottish) Terriers. They were possessed of the independence of a friggin' cat, but the intelligence of a dog. They didn't really care for anyone who visited, and I'm not altogether sure that they cared much for us, either (except at feeding time). They didn't obey a single command. They were perfectly clean and neat around the house, let themselves out when needed, and generally treated us like semi-welcome house guests. I loved them dearly and couldn't replace my fond memories of them with anything I can think of.

Now we have only one dog, and not a Scottie. But a great character anyway.

OK, I might as well admit it: I am the one who chose "Both". 0:)

We currently have a cat, brought back from Russia (the cat's name is Vasya, or Vasilissa - like every other Russian cat's ;D).

She is very well trained.

'Push!' and she'll continue to sleep.

'Roll over!' - if this is done the proper way (loudly enough), she might open her eyes.

'Sit!' she'll continue to sleep.

'Nicely!' she'll sleep very nicely.

'All gone!' she'll dream of all the food she's eaten.

'Whos that?!' she will probably think up an answer. Dunno, she never tells me these things.

She's smart, I tell ya!

No, I meant to include a 'Both' option. 'Not fussy' is for people who'd be as okay with having either of them as pets as having no pets at all. ;)

I think you should add that explanation to the poll (in brackets or something).

I own 3 dogs and 3 cats and while they can be a handful at times, I love them all.

I'm more of a dog person.  By no mean anti-cat - but dogs fit into my life better.  It's nice to have company when walking across the fields - and it's not quite the same with a cat.

Though I'd be the first to admit that very few of my dogs have been exactly trouble-free.  One was an out-and-out psychopath.

Maybe it was a cat in disguise?

Could be.  It certainly hated other dogs.  Having to deal with other dog owners in a state of hysterics was a regular feature of "walking" that maniac.

It is my considered opinion that refusal to obey commands is yet another mark of high intelligence in certain breeds of dog. By that standard, my Scotties were friggin' geniuses!

"Screw you, you fetch the damn ball, you threw it"

How come you're not a cat man then, Gurn? 0:)

Cats do it because they're furry, quadrupedal sphincters.

My dogs did it because they were merely eccentric.

Eccentricity is not laudable when it is inherent to the species, only when it is extraordinary. :D

I guarantee you, you haven't the patience to train a Scottie. They'd eat your ass for breakfast and give no more than a good belch after. ;)

Hey, I'm just teasing. ;D But I know a dog trainer who's never met a mutt they couldn't put in its proper place. I asked if that place was a pound, and got a very stern look. ;D

Why do you end every sentence with an ellipsis?

Yes, I'm sure he was NOT amused. :)

But seriously, Scotties are considered virtually untrainable, even by experts. These only learned 2 commands, "Stop" and "NO". And they only obeyed if it suited them. But they were perfect house dogs, as clean as could be. Really, we didn't demand more of them than that. I got 5 of them in 1 picture, only because they were waiting for my wife to return from feeding the livestock so she could feed them. Otherwise there was no way to sit them together on purpose... ::)

I like it, it shows a comfortable disregard for convention... ;)

Once I preferred cats then we got a dog and I literally fell in love with him.
Now we have two cats: a 3 years old black female, which practically roams in the countryside all time and come back home just in time to eat and paint my bed with her muddy paws. The other one is an 11 years old 8 kg persian crossbread who spends most of his time eating. He eats so voraciously he often throw up. Usually on my bed again, or on the carpet. He's - strangely I think - crazy for almond oil. He licks tons of that stuff.
So now my preference goes towards dogs, much more love deserving in my opinion. That doesn't prevent me from loving cats as well; simply I spend much more time and find more easy and satisfying the communication with my dog: Tommy.
