One interesting note about this recording of misc. orchestral works is Rozhdestvensky's Helios is the slowest on record clocking in over 14 minutes. Ah, the Celibidache approach. 8)

Hmm, I bet Helios sounds great at a slower pace!   :)

I'll certainly let you know, Peter. 8)

I have found that I really enjoy Sibelius's "lesser" works (in particular the chamber works and the piano pieces) so I am splurging on this set after listening to the music with the help of BIS' web site.  http://www.bis.se/naxos.php?aID=BIS-CD-1924-26

Pounds the table! I need to get those chamber music sets (eventually). :)

The ICON box of John Ogdon.
So much unusual repertoire, or stuff I lack, such as the Busoni.

Hmm, I see that includes the marvelous Passacaglia on DSCH by Ronald Stevenson.

I could swear I saw you post purchasing that a while ago.  :blank:

Arrived today (and inspired by Ken B  ;) a few weeks ago - Thanks!).
There are still some affordable copies left at Amazon.fr, but otherwise the price has skyrocketed as the set is OOP.  Seemingly some interesting French music to explore in this set! E.g. a number of Tournemire's symphonies.

Welcome!  :D I like that a lot. A LOT of repertoire I did not have, and had never heard, and generally excellent performances and sound.

I could have posted and deleted a post as I've been known to cancel orders due to some other interests that are more urgent, but, this time, I definitely have a desire to hear more of Halvorsen's music.

The Liège Philharmonic box is worth purchasing at that price. I paid mine under 65$ (canadian) a couple years back.

Just landed: the late recordings of Karl Böhm (DGG, 23 discs). I owned a good 80% of those recordings, but what can I say ? It's neat to have them all  8)

I had that Beethoven cycle on vinyl and liked it a lot. Hurwitz's disdain for the slow Sibelius appealled to me as well. It was $32 shipped from Overstock.com
This is is box I bought partly on spec, partly on negative reviews. They seemed negative only because the reading was unusual, they praised the playing, the detail, etc. Different is good as the former corporal says.

I bought this mainly for the documentary The Light and the Darkness, but it certainly would be nice to see Schonwandt in action with the Danish NSO in this superlative cycle of symphonies.

Abbado's Mozart box with Orchestra Mozart
I have 3 of the 8 discs already. What have I done??

???  :-[

Bernard Michael O'Hanlan gave it a scathing review. I think that's what pushed me over the top.

I've been putting off buying this last installment in Gilbert's Nielsen series for the simple fact that I think his cycle has been rather disappointing for me BUT this recording comes highly recommended by Jeffrey Smith who doesn't think much of Gilbert's Nielsen either. But should I trust someone who isn't a Nielsenite telling me how great this new recording is? Does Gilbert actually nail the essence of these works? Do all the soloists exhibit the necessary traits to interpret these masterpieces and if they do, do they succeed? So many questions, but, for now, I'll patiently wait. :)
