Very good choices. The Monteux Damnation is the best I have heard - albeit in ancient, if spacious sound.

Just bought:

A disc curiously missing from my Holmboe collection. Bought it for $7. Problem solved! 8)

I'll be interested in your opinions, as it's a somewhat curious disc. Basically bringing together BIS' earliest Holmboe recordings from several separate albums. So you end up with a lot of different types of music.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I bought this mainly for the Cello Concerto, but it will be nice to hear Triade for trumpet and organ and Quintet for brass. I take it you own every Holmboe recording that's been released so far? :)

No, we previously established people are ahead of me with the guitar music!

I think that might be the only all-Holmboe disc I haven't picked up.

Then by all means, get the guitar music disc!

I've got Markevitch's Berlin recording (in the Musik, Sprache der Welt box), the one you mentioned in the WAYLTN thread, Moonfish. Please do let su know how this later Paris recording compares to the earlier one (which I must relisten to sometime soon, anyway).

Cheers,

At the risk of angering the crazy Holmboe guy ;), I didn't really like the CC (at least, not nearly as much as I liked the 3rd symphony).
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Well, let's look at a little timeline here: Holmboe composed the Cello Concerto from 1974–9 while his Symphony No. 3 "Sinfonia rustica" was composed in 1941. By these contrasting times alone, one can assume that Holmboe's style had changed quite a bit. Give Holmboe more of a fighting chance. I used to not like his mature output, but now I enjoy more of his music from all periods. Persistence I think is the key with Holmboe or at least that was the case with me.

Probably my favourite recording of that work; it is excellent!

If the title is a public declaration of intentions, this recording looks very attractive.  :)

I'm curious, Todd: have you listened to Slávka Pěchočová playing Janáček (Praga Digitals)?

Cheers,

I was so impressed with Markevitch's earlier 1954 recording (below) that I simply had to get his later stereo rendition! It seems like the latter has a very good reputation. Considering how much I enjoyed the earlier performance I cannot wait to hear it!  :)
