yes indeed, though the references to "ORF EDITION ALTE MUSIK" and "Salzburger Nachrichten" may be the cause of Midgley's (without checking I seem to remember it was him that mentioned Austria) confusion.

Anyway, a smallscale male ensemble is my definitive preference in repertoire like this. I've grown pretty tired of large choirs and too many sopranos......

I also see that they are recording more stuff:

•Barbireau: geistliches Gesamtwerk
•Ockeghem: Missa L'homme arme und Missa quinti toni

Hopefully the new recordings have more tasteful art......

I's be interested to know what the music's like in those motets, whether the counterpoint is as nice as in his magnificats.

I feel Kuhnau is one of the dark horses of Baroque music, and fully intend to follow this projected series of his surviving cantatas.

Indeed, but fortunately a horse that has been trotting lately out of the enourmous shadow of J.S. Bach.  :)
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Had a bit of a splurge this last week, all at knock down prices (which didn't last too long).  Working through the Telemann and Mozart this morning.

Not a CD, but a book:

Paolo Isotta is arguably Italy's most infleuntial music critic (writing for Milan's Il Corriere della Sera). He's highly controversial, often scathing and never seeks to conceal his pet hates (the late Claudio Abbado apparently being one of these  >:( ). Still, most reviews say this book of memoirs is rather interesting, if disorganized. It's the first full-length book Mr. Isotta has published in 30 years (to be followed in October this year by a  new one).

Cheers, Tony!

Cheers Karl,

Looking for good things in Rozhdestventsky's RVW, but don't read good reviews about Masur in Bruckner  :(. Still it's worth a punt as I thought his 7th was a good performance, one I have owned for quite a while.

Bought the Strauss after reading good things, and confirmation by Harry on a thread a while back. Recalling how Harry recommended the big Zinman box recordings  :)  Individually I now have his Mahler, Beethoven & Strauss.

Brand new from a UK Amz Seller BigThomas, £4.99

I have many of these no frills, no nonsense Sony boxes and singles.  A great inexpensive way to grab fillers and major bargains reissued.

Cool!

The symphonies are, of course, the first five CDs of the Symphony Edition (no, I've not waded into that part of the pool, just yet).

been splurging this week.
First a series of orders off Amazon MP.  Some of them are from UK vendors and may not arrive for another month, but I have enough other stuff to listen to.

Perhaps Herr Letzbor will help me solve the Biber Mysteries.

Round two,  a single purchase off Arkivmusic that landed yesterday.  Bruch at suggestion of Brian.   The Henze will be my first recording of anything by that composer (the violin concerto is from the BBC Archives, and conducted by Henze himself).

And finally this one,  mentioned in passing, off Arkiv's one day sale

I have those Telemann and Beethoven and are very good. I particularly like the Alexander Quartet. Actually, the play, for instance, my favourite "Razumovsky" quartets.

If you don't have it, maybe in the future you could be interested in this 2-CD set of Mozart's wind serenades:

It's really fantastic.  :)

BTW, the Richter Icon and Martinon box can probably be considered super duper cheap bargains on Amazon MP right now--about $20 for the Richter and $29 for the Martinon, including s/h and sales tax on the Martinon.

Well done!

And beyond the Boulez, Ives, Stravinksy, and possibly Nono, all pieces I have never heard. In fact except for those four, all composers of whom I have nothing heretofore.   Even Karl Heinz is in here, although (James will be furious to note this) relegated to the "and more" category.

Hey I want that! And for that price I can't go wrong. Thanks for the posting, gentlemen.
