Thanks, Greg. Even though I've read that Crumb's music for smaller ensembles is the way to experience the true Crumb, I seem to always flock to a composer's orchestral music first.

FWIW, the chamber groups are so wonderfully specific . . . when I've heard him use an orchestra, it always felt to me that the music underutilized the resource.

It is a fascinating item.

Thanks, Karl. I was close to pulling the trigger on the Prokofiev alone for $10. Then I learned of this box, which has a bunch of other stuff I was interested in.

This is what I've been reading, but I still love the sound of these orchestral works. As to whether the orchestra is underused, I'm not going to say, as there are several orchestral works that call for an orchestra but don't seem to deliver 'the goods' so to speak, but this doesn't tarnish my opinion of the music.

Well, that's what counts!

Mozart: Piano Quartets played by Ax, Stern, Laredo and Ma....

Just ordered my second Weinberg disc:

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thats part of a box, and a very cheap one at that!
The Motets of Melani are very good, especially in this performance.
:)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I can't quite recall why I didn't wishlist the box - probably have too many of the other performances and/or pieces. In any case, got a good deal on the disc...and I am enjoying it so far!

I do hope you have this one from the box already, Neal - truly a gem of a disc.

In that case the box would have been a much better deal. :P

This has been on my List for a while also. However, could someone please point me in the direction of the box so that I can check it out.

Thank you very much for that; I will check it out to see how much, if any, of it that I have.

Really more for Sinopoli, the Ballets Russes and Harry Count Kessler, than for the work itself (which I knew previously in the Wakasugi recording and don't think is that good).

[asin]B000266XWG[/asin]
I bought this more for the "concert version" of Milhaud's L'Homme et son désir (which it includes, even if it doesn't appear on the cover) than for the Honegger (as La Danse des morts is IMHO not one of his best opuses). I already knew Milhaud's score in its full ballet version conducted by Abravanel, with the vocalists onomatopoeic interjections--which, frankly, can be a tad tiresome in repetaed listening, even if they probably are very effective in a staged performance.

[asin]B00004I9TI[/asin]
Except for the Petite suite, Op. 39, I don't know any of Roussel's works included here (Piano concerto, Concerto for small orchestra and Cello concertino)..

And, in its budget "Galleria" incarnation, the image of which I can't find in the web:

I supopose this music should fit Sinopoli's temperament very well...
