.

I have some Roussel symphonies performed by Martinon and Munch, but so far the 1st has escaped me. The set includes many excellent couplings of little-known Roussel.

Music written in the year 1914: Koechlin: violin sonata op. 64; Vierne: préludes pour piano op. 36; Piano quintet op.42
At 88:27, this is the longest single CD I've ever seen. Hopefully my cd player will encompass the range.

Re: Roussel

Don't forget to pick this one up:

Ooooo that's a good symphony! Gliere's 3rd deserves more performances. Epic work!
Can't agree more. As riveting a work as late Romantic work. Still only a handful of complete recordings sadly. The Downes is very good, I also recommend the recent Buffalo/Falletta recording.

I hear the Farberman is also top-notch. Any commentary on this particular performance?

I have it, the obviously thing is that it is slow...real slow. The first movement especially is played at about 1/2 the tempo of other performances and I am not exaggerating. Proponents say that is "detailed" but I am not so sure. Falletta is not as slow but still pretty deliberate yet achieves the same level of detail. But the Farberman is a fascinating performance if you like to place the score under a microscope and analyze every nitty gritty detail. So yes I think if you are interested in this piece you should hear the Farberman. I think it is on Youtube as well, as well as Downes and Falletta.

This piece brings out the best in orchestras for some reason.

Cool, thanks. I'll probably just listen to the Downes and go from there. It's been ages since I've listen to any of Gliere's music, so getting that Chandos set seemed like a good way to familiarize myself with his music.

Another thing about the Falletta is that the engineering is very similar to the Petrenko/DSCH cycle - raw, immediate, very detailed. So if you enjoy that set this should be your cup of tea as well.

Downes on youtube as the score to follow along as well - and you really appreciate the journey through this score.

I'd probably enjoy it even more if I could read music. :-\ Since that's not happening, I'll just enjoy the aural journey in the meantime.

No bother, I just found out. It was the 1912 - 2012 anniversary box  :D

Should be good. I've read several good reviews about the set.
