Arrived today, purchases recommended by Surprised by Beauty (the Braunfels' chapter written by our Jens): Braunfels's Te Deum, String Quintet and Phantastische Erscheinungen eines Themas von Hector Berlioz; and Stephen Albert's Symphony RiverRun.

Ah, this is heartening to see & read. Although I must give credit to Bob Reilly for that chapter; it's merely one I contributed to. (It's true, though, that the recommended recording section was completely overhauled and written by me... as so much had happened in the Braunfels discography since 2003.)

Today's arrivals, on sale from Presto:

[asin]B00J9X94Q0[/asin]

Each of which piles a huge amount of standard-def video onto a single Blu-ray. This should keep me busy for quite a while. The back-cover listings are not even complete. Note: the online listings show the Stern-Rose-Istomin Brahms Trios on the Strings disc, which is incorrect (they are on the Ensembles disc, though).

Two classic interpretations, big band Haydn and wonderful soloists. Can't be beat.

Pulled the trigger on this one today:

...
It's arrived today!  :) Nice how they've managed the 65 CDs not take up too much shelf space...

All very compact. The booklet is slim, but appeares to have all the necessary information on the recordings, and includes a short essay on Cluytens, as well as some words by Anja Silja (who was romantically attached to the conductor in the years before his death).

They haven't stuck infelixibly to the "original covers" concept. The sleeves of the individual CDs reproduce the cover of the "main" LP it contains, but also (in a smaller size) other LPs that are included.

I think I have many hours of pleasant summer listening ahead of me. I think the complete Debussy Martyre will be my starting point  :)

I'd like to hear your opinion on this. I have listened to all the Rouse I can find on Spotify and I find they all seem to be somewhat lacking in character....interpretations I have heard seem to make his music sound rather capricious, and I am sure there are more interesting ways to play his music.

But I still would like to hear what you think.

Place both CD's on my wish list.  Ildebrando Pizzetti is a new composer for me.  Checked out his works on YouTube.  Thanks.

Not terribly symphonic, but pretty and colorful, like some of Honeggers orchestral works in his less than great moments. Enjoyable after a first listening (first impressions etc, YMMV), but no strong character. Pastoral d'Ete sprung to mind more than once.

The last one should be in the world music/crossover category. In fact, for me Omer the bassist is the draw here.

I still think the tone poem Taormina on one of those discs is the worst-composed piece of music I've ever heard professionally recorded.
"l do not consider my music as atonal, but rather as non-tonal. I feel the unity of all keys. Atonal music by modern composers admits of no key at all, no feeling of any definite center." - Arnold Schoenberg
