Many thanks for all the research and details unearthed on the Markevitch affair  :).

Now, if one of the moderators could pick up these posts and send them in a new Markevitch thread, that would be quite useful !

That looks interesting :).

Yes it does, doesn't it. I will see how I get on with it.

Ghost of Baron Scarpia

I have come to terms with no complete Markevitch box.

I have these:

[asin]B010RQBBJA[/asin]

[asin]B000001GXH[/asin]

[asin]B008PC1GE4[/asin]

[asin]B00000416A[/asin]

[asin]B0000041BS[/asin]

[asin]B0036BDPVG[/asin]

[asin]B0000041AF[/asin]
(Only Symphony of Psalms is Markevitch)

I have on order

[asin]B00009LW31[/asin]

[asin]B00000416F[/asin]
(Only Apollo is Markevitch)

And I plan to get downloads of these OOP releases

(Symphonie Fantastique + some smaller works)

(Only plan to download Harold in Italy).

Maybe I can snag a copy of the Beethoven 5 and 8 on the French release.

That, in conjunction with Murphy's Law, should be sufficient to precipitate a complete Markevitch edition from DGG/Decca, I think. :)

Don't forget the Berlin Phil Pathétique. Great mono sound, incredible performance.

That's the one in the 9CD Original Masters Box from DG, no? He also did one with Lenningrad which is grouped with the Mavrinsky recordings on a DG originals release. Maybe I should add that to the list.

The only orchestral music disc that doesn't tempt me is the Berwald/Schubert disc.

Brian

You're skipping Le Damnation de Faust?! That's a stupendous performance, certainly if I had a whole archipelago of desert islands it would be on the Berlioz one. The sheer old-school Frenchness and shameless thrill-seeking are really in a class of their own.

But maybe you really dislike the piece or already own that performance and I'm overreacting!

JBS

ordered a couple of days ago.
Sorry, guys, nothing to do with Markevitch.  I have those Tchaikovsky two-fers, and can vouch for them, at least.
Prompted to order this after discussion here at GMG

This one allures not because of the concertos but because of the quintet: as best I can recall, I only have PI recordings of this work.

Originally ordered this as a preorder from Amazon, then cancelled when I realized that Amazon had no idea if it would ever have it stock.

And this

Oh dear, will you convince me to listen to opera? Maybe. :)

I don't even think of it as an opera because it's so damn fun. (In the Markevitch version.)

Ghost of Baron Scarpia

Ok. Unfortunately it's out of print and used copies lean towards pricey.

I forgot, I also have this one.

Concidentally, his Pictures from Leipzig are on their way to my mailbox !

Berlioz' Faust is not really an opera. The Originals does not seem too pricey in Europe, or you can try to find the older version, althought this one lacks Harold. The Berlin mono Fantastique might be cheaper in the coupling with the mono Pictures

[asin]B0000256I2[/asin] [asin]B0000246RW[/asin]

The Pathetique mentioned by André is in the DG box. Pictures from Leipzig is later and stereo, I believe.

I have almost nothing from the EMI box, except for one Testament disc that corresponds to disc 7.

Correct. Thanks for the precision!

Here's the final puzzle.

This release, Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov, Markevitch, LSO.

Has it made it to CD? You might be tempted to counter with this:

but you'd be wrong. They swapped out Markevitch for Kondrashin for the Scheherazade.

Is there a CD release out there?

Maybe that's the one they've been holding back to compel us to buy a complete DGG/Decca edition.  >:(

Thanks!

Why can't I live in Japan? (Well, except for speaking Japanese, and stuff).

I have added a few to my list, JPC de has free postage.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

And this completes my foray into the labels Accent and Coviello..sale
