Ha! Depends on your tastes. The Orfeo disc with FiDi digs into the darkest recesses of Reger's conception of Die Deutsche Seele. All four works on that disc are heart-wrenching. Think Winterreise, a Caspar-David Friedrich painting, that sort of thing. The late opuses for choir and orchestra in the DG box are from the same litter (discs 10-12, I think). For my money that box is the best one composer compendium I've ever come across.

In a lighter mood, the concertos might win your favour. Some consider that "Light Reger" is an oxymoron, but there are many instances of heartfelt lyricism, wit and gorgeous harmonies. Try resisting the two Romances for violin and orchestra (disc 1 from the DGG box) !

The violin sonatas and string quartets are among the best works in their respective genre. I always enjoy listening to them. I sincerely hope you enjoy the journey !

Well, there's a lot to take in here and I appreciate your feedback. I think I'll start with the Orfeo disc of the orchestral lieder and the Requiem. That seems like a good bet, then I'll branch out into the DG set.

A Scarlatti: Serenate A Filli [La Risonanza]

We know well how good they are in Handel; how will they fare with the music of A Scarlatti?

I know I am supposed to have stopped ordering CDs, but I have a good excuse today (it is Wednesday!) and I need to check to see if my new credit card works.

Brilliant! All those things were true of me yesterday, too, so

I want these Hindemith boxes so bad, but they're never going to be super-duper cheap (although this one was £18 yesterday).

All of those Hindemith CPO sets are fantastic and quite comprehensive. He wrote a lot of orchestral music, but just think of how much music he wrote in other genres. Quite a vast oeuvre.

By the look of the cover on most recent album (syms.6 & 9) it appears that Nelsons has found his way out of the maze known as a stairwell, and he's happy about it.

I've only heard the 3rd from this cycle, and it was good. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on these, John.

Yeah, he does look rather elated I must say. I've heard nothing but great things about these recordings. I can't wait to hear them.

I suggest starting with Le Loup and the Oboe Sonata.

That's the Gewandhaus staircase.  But he's still stuck on the BSO staircase used for the cover photos of the in progress DSCH cycle (the most recent installment being 6 and 7).

Yes, sadly.  No reference source I've looked at even hazards a guess at the number of his compositions.  Perhaps I should forget Hindemith and start developing an enthusiasm for Barraqué instead...

Deirdre Gribbin: Island People

André

I'm happy to have found this at an almost reasonable price. 1950s-60s performances in good sound. Musicweb is enthusiastic about this disc. Performances are led by Herbert Kegel, Stokowski, Schuricht and Rolf Reinhardt. After a cursory glance at the score of the first symphony, Furtwängler grabbed it from the composer's hands and secured a promise to give the premiere.. Why Raphael's music is not performed any more is a profound mystery.
