I listened to Feldman's Trio twice recently. It is a single movement lasting some 90 minutes. Every once in a while a note is struck. I felt like in a coma. The feeling was pleasant. I might explore some more.

I find those later "Persian rug" works extremely daunting given that they all seem to follow the same design. Have you heard Rothko Chapel or Cello and Orchestra? I find these two works outstanding, but also a work like Bass Clarinet and Percussion is great fun. He really was a master of sonority and subtlety. There's a lot to explore, but I'm afraid I haven't even tipped this iceberg yet. He was quite prolific.

Always good to load up on some Feldman.

It is, indeed. :) What recording of For Christian Wolff would you recommend? The one on Bridge or the one on Hat Hut? I'm also looking for a recording of Patterns in a Chromatic Field but there are several of them. I'm learning towards the one on the Hat Hut label. Any preference in this work?

Concerning For Christian Wolff, I like the Eberhard Blum recording.

But I have yet to hear a recording of this work that I did not think was worthwhile.

Re: Patterns in a Chromatic Field, the Mathis Mayr recording is the one I currently like the best.

:D Yes, indeed. These were some recordings that I had forgotten about or that caught my ears. Looking forward to hearing these recordings. Do you own much Feldman? I ended up with a good bit over the years (and I keep adding to the collection).

I've got a total of two Feldman discs: For Samuel Beckett on Kairos, and a disc with Rothko Chapel and Why Patterns?—unsure of the label. Very good music, and I have a lot of respect for his art, but I seldom am in the mood to listen to one of these works in their entirety. Anyway, those Hat[now]Art discs you've ordered should be really good. I am becoming a fan of that label. I'm looking at another Feldman disc, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello on a small label called Another Timbre. Sounds good to me. It's his last work.

Just bought:

This is supposed to be a great book. I believe this was one of a few books selected by the composer/Youtuber David Bruce as essential reads for aspiring composers/musicians. I'm sure one of these days when I decide to immerse myself in his music, I will pick up a copy and read it.

Rothko Chapel, yes. But that's the only other work by Feldman I have. Thanks for the rec., re: Cello and Orchestra. I'll put that one on the 'explore' list !

I seem to be most impressed with his works from the 60s and 70s. Some phenomenal works from these decades include the much-acclaimed Rothko Chapel, Violin and Orchestra, The Viola in My Life, Cello and Orchestra, For Franz Kline, Two Pieces for Three Pianos, Piano, Neither, Five Pianos, De Kooning, amongst others. Do check these works out (if you haven't already). I think it's important to realize that Feldman's music exists in a completely different aural dimension than most other composers. Time and space have been suspended. The notion of melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. have been thrown out. Truly a fascinating composer and, if I were a composer, I'd probably write in a similar way. I like the idea that texture and color have a huge prominence in the music.

Barber, Complete Orchestral Works, Alsop:

After listening to a variety of Barber orchestral works, I can't find anything he wrote that I don't like. At the suggestion of someone on another discussion board, I picked this one up, just to have everything.

What riches await you! That's a fantastic set and even though I'd supplement several of the performances for others, Alsop's Barber is quite consistent throughout. I hope you enjoy the music.

Thread duty -

After much back and forth, I decided to buy this recording of La vida breve and based on what I heard moments ago via YouTube, I made a wise decision. The only other recording of this opera I own is from Pons on Harmonia Mundi, which didn't really satisfy in a way I thought it should have. Pons is generally very good in Falla, but I found his La vida breve to be missing a certain magic.

A great choice. He didn't write that much but everything is of such a high standard.

I'll probably end up getting at least one of those Another Timbre releases, so let me know which one(s) you like most.

+ 2.

I found something interesting on CPO, a 2-disc set that includes Cello and Orchestra. That will be on my next order.

I ordered a CPO Feldman disc today myself:

Especially excited for the 5 Durations. Can't say I've come to grips with any of Feldman's late style and I expect this will be no exception, but it will be something for me to explore in the future perhaps not without enjoyment!

I am open to recommendations for other discs of his music. I want one of those Hat Hut discs as I'm a fan of their sonics, but I am not sure which are worthwhile.
