I'll probably end up getting at least one of those Another Timbre releases, so let me know which one(s) you like most.

I'll probably like them all. I haven't made a bad choice yet in any of the Feldman I've purchased.

+ 2.

I found something interesting on CPO, a 2-disc set that includes Cello and Orchestra. That will be on my next order.

Yes, that's a great set, Andre and that would be a worthwhile recommendation for a newcomer, IMHO.

I ordered a CPO Feldman disc today myself:

Especially excited for the 5 Durations. Can't say I've come to grips with any of Feldman's late style and I expect this will be no exception, but it will be something for me to explore in the future perhaps not without enjoyment!

I am open to recommendations for other discs of his music. I want one of those Hat Hut discs as I'm a fan of their sonics, but I am not sure which are worthwhile.

As I may have mentioned on this thread (or another), for me, Feldman's best music stems from his 60s and 70s periods. But there is still some good music in the later period. Bass Clarinet and Percussion, for example, is a miniature masterpiece --- well, miniature by Feldman standards at this juncture (it's around 17 minutes long). Check it out if you haven't already. The problem with so much of his discography, especially on the Hat Hut label is it's out-of-print.

I remembered I also have Coptic Light. It is the coupling to Bruckner's 8th symphony by Gielen. Need to give it a listen...

It's a cool work. The work exists in a half-lit twilight world where time and space are in suspension is how I would describe it. :)

That (2-cd set of "concertos" on cpo, cond. Hans Zender) was my first Feldman purchase.

Very nice, indeed. My first was Rothko Chapel coupled with Why Patterns? on the New Albion label. I still cherish this disc to this day as it opened several doors for me.

That was my first Feldman as well, I got it at a record store in Chicago, knowing nothing about the composer at the time. I listened to it earlier. The Rothko Chapel is really good.

Indeed. I bought this recording around 2009 or so and haven't looked back. Feldman definitely had left his imprint in my subconscious.

I don't know a better Rothko Chapel.  Some of the other recordings sound crude in comparison.

Yes, I think there's a certain atmospheric quality that's captured in this performance that has yet to be bettered.

Couldn't resist this at less than $20 from Amazon, to compliment the Ashkenazy set.... I've really been enjoying Demus' Bach WTC over the past week...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Agh, don't remind me. I have been fighting off the temptation to buy this set for months now. What's stopping me is that I already have a few box sets with Schumann's (incomplete) piano music, the Murray Perahia/Sony and the EMI bicentennial set with several pianists, but I don't really like them! Frankly, I question whether any pianist can pull off ALL of Schumann's piano music with as varied as it is, but I have a feeling Demus might come pretty close.

Bought more Feldman:

Also bought:

I've read nothing but great things about this Rana recording. Ravel's Miroirs is one of my favorite pieces of music and what I heard of Rana's performance on YouTube sounded fantastic.

Demus does that.

I have the Brilliant set, with several different pianists. Obviously not every thing is done equally well, but fortunately the best peformances are in the pieces that don't get played by every big pianist.

Damn it, I was afraid so  ;D I don't have a choice but to pull the trigger on it then. Probably will do so on payday.

You surely mean "them", not "it": Demus and the Brilliant Classics.  ;D

;D Maybe in the future, but for now, Demus is priority. Like I may have said already, I already have tons of Schumann piano music in my library, much of which I have been neglecting.

TD:

Just ordered this after a friend on another board sent me the whole performance on youtube. I listened to about 20 minutes and was hooked right away.

What other board? Talk Classical? Anyway, that's an okay recording. I'm not crazy about the brightness of the audio quality. I hope the recording I bought on the Hat Art label is more to my liking.
