DSCH: Symphony No.8, Ashkenazy/RPO.
I've read almost exclusively negative reviews of this recording.
However! When I was a student at Lancaster University in the North of England from 1973-76 I took adavantage of a mini-bus trip one evening to go to Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool to hear Ashkenazy conduct Shostakovich's 8th Symphony. It was the first time that I'd ever been to Liverpool and there were still large open areas which showed the results of World War Two bombing. On a happier note there was a great pub 'The Philharmonic' which was like a mini-version of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The performance was deeply moving and made more memorable by the leader shredding his bow during a crucial solo just before the end of the symphony (it turned into cotton wool and was greeted by wild applause from the audience at the end of the concert). Also, there was a cat, in the concert hall, who kept miaowing during the performance. It was, a most memorable evening:

When is the recording from Jeffrey?  It sounds like quite a memorable evening!  Though it sounds like the cat wasn't happy with all of the 'ruckus'.   ;)

PD - the Ashkenazy recording with the RPO on Decca was from 1992 so nothing to do with Jeffrey RLPO concert from the mid 70's!

I didn't think that it was...just curious as to how old/recent it was.   ;) :)

I'll go ahead and post this:

When I find a way to pre-order it, I most certainly will. This is perhaps the most exciting new release this year for me so far.

Can't they wait until I've explored his work? I'm only up to opus 25, how am I going to know whether I want a box that big?  ;D

EDIT: Never mind. I saw on the New Releases thread where you posted the back of the box showing the contents. 8 or 9 discs of waste from my perspective.

Oooh!  I have the Puccini recording (older issue)--great choice!  :)

The Kodaly one looks quite interesting.  I'm looking forward to hearing your review of it as I do quite enjoy Kodaly.

I don't know your last pick (Beethoven/Shostakovich) in terms of either conductor or orchestra.

Happy listening!

Yes, given your listening methods, this box set would've worked out well. For me, the biggest waste come from the historical recordings, which I mostly likely will never listen to, but also the two discs of transcriptions and arrangements isn't of particular high interest. But still, even forgetting about those discs, it's 24 discs of this composer's music that I am interested in and there's no other Saint-Saëns box set out there that has this many discs under one roof.

Just bought:

I was surprised to learn that I didn't already own this --- I definitely had to rectify this immediately. Langgaard + Oramo + Wiener Philharmoniker? Yes!!!

It's as good as you could hope from the combo. Spectacular playing, and super well chosen encores too ("Unnoticed Morning Stars" is perfect for the WPO strings).

Bought late last night:

I bought this 2-CD set from Amazon Japan and it's been newly remastered. Can't wait to hear if there are significant sonic improvements over the last iteration of this set.

Very nice, but I still prefer the CD format.

Edit: I just checked and, no, not all of Barbirolli's Delius for EMI is there in hi-res.

Very nice John - two great discs. I love 'In a Summer Garden'.

Exactly. This habit of padding out boxes with "historical recordings" in particular seems to me an utterly cynical exercise in trying to force people to buy more of a company's catalogue without getting a significant benefit from the purchase.
