(* chortle *)

Meanwhile, here in Woburn, Wonder of the North: I had ordered the Herrmann on 22 June, the Orpheus on 24 June. As I noted earlier, the Orphic delivery was pushed out to August's end. I was (up until this morning) expecting Herrmann today As of this afternoon, I wait until 5 or 6 Sep for Herrmann, but now I can expect the OCO this Thursday. Of course, I am still working through the Stravinsky and Heidsieck boxes, so I do not want for listening.

On my side, it's all cool (and of course, lately there's been Henri in the mix.)

It might or might not be of interest to note that of the 55 CDs in the OCO set, 10 are dedicated to Mozart, 7 to Haydn, 3 each to Handel, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky. There is one CD devoted to contemporary ( in terms of the mid 1990s recording date) composers.

I reflexively put the Orpheus box on pre-order with the thought that I have a bunch of great CDs from them, there must be lots of others that I don't have. When I looked at the contents I noticed that, in fact, I already have all of the Orpheus CDs that I would want. Order canceled. Then I saw a notice of a complete conduct edition coming out from DG in the fall. But now I've forgotten who the conductor is. Ah, Markevitch! Ready to pounce. :)

Lots of great big boxes coming this fall - Markevitch (DG), Markevitch (Philips), Bohm (DG), Bohm (Decca/Philips), Solti/London (Decca), Geza Anda (DG), Furtwangler (Warner), Erich Kleiber (Decca), Jessye Norman (Decca), Cziffra (Warner), Kocsis (Philips), Jansons (Bavarian Radio)...

I already had about a quarter of the Orpheus CDs in one form or another (for instance, 2 of them appear in Martha Argerich sets and about half the Stravinsky is used for DGs Complete Stravinsky ). And between 2 and 5 of the CDs can be assigned to the "Anthology of Popular Classical Hits" genre (the number of CDs depends on whether you include works like "The Bullfighter's Last Prayer" and "Fantasia on Greensleeves" in that category)
But there's only one CD which I am likely to play no more than once (folk songs with Andreas Scholl as soloist).

I ordered then canceled the Cziffra set the first time it came out (EMI). It tempts again. Other than that, only the Markevitch is a big temptation. But I have to look carefully to see how much would be not be redundant with what I already have.

The only one that truly tempts me is the Cziffra.

Is the Solti box a collection of recordings with the London SO or a collection of his recordings on the label "London"?  If the latter either it doesn't include his opera recordings or it's this year's gigabox.

I assume Solti/London refers to London Philharmonic and/or London Symphony, since "London Records" was just the name Decca records were sold under in the U.S., since there already was an American record labeled called "Decca."

Cziffra certainly is a temptation. It is one of those releases that went out of print very quickly, with scarce used copies listed for something like $500 on Amazon. Some people who recently ponied up will feel very silly when they hear of the re-release.

Stocked up for the winter on some more Gubaidulina and Penderecki (and a bonus Kancheli disc):

I think I'm going to cool it after this awhile. Hopefully, this will be my last purchase until the Saint-Saëns box set comes out in October.

Wait, which comes first, winter or October?

From where MI lives I think he is only familiar with winter as an abstract idea! ;D

Anyway MI those Penderecki recordings are great, hope you enjoy.

Hah...well, I meant that I'm hoping I won't purchase anything else until after winter. :) But as I said, that Saint-Saëns box set on Warner will probably be a purchase.

:D Excellent to read, Dave. Wit is usually a reliable conductor in Polish music.

I forgot to add some other recordings I had bought last night to my post from above:

The idea of an over/under prop bet on "date of next purchase" comes to mind. If March 20, 2022 (first day of spring) is the line, I'd bet the ranch on the under.  ;)

JBS

The Penderecki Sextet is a great piece of music, as most of the rest of that CD.

TD
A co-worker was talking the other day about Benny Goodman's second recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. By a natural progression any GMGer will understand, I just ordered most of Goodman's classical recordings from Amazon MP vendors.

All but one of these works were written for him, and all are conducted by the respective composer except the Bartok, a trio for violin, clarinet, and piano in which Bartok was the pianist.

Not the only reason to order this set, but it includes Goodman's first recording of the Mozart concerto.

The recording my co-worker was talking about. The Quintet recording is actually from the 1930s.

Except for the Barbirolli all of them are used CDs.
Missing from this are a Brahms sonata recorded in the late 1940s and the third recording of the Mozart concerto, done with an Austrian orchestra in the late 1960s.

You say "date". I propose "time".
