Quote from: Florestan on February 16, 2023, 12:56:43 PMNice haul, Que. Those Profil boxes look particularly interesting.

Just €10 a pop!  :o  Previously posted on the bargains thread.
The Rimsky is sold out, but there is also a Tchaikovsky (which I already had)

Quote from: Harry on February 16, 2023, 12:57:42 PMThat is quite a haul for you Que, and a huge pile of CD'S, you probably need to move to your own castle, like you advised me once, aeons ago ;D  ;D

I guess I now have to. ;D  But this was my 1st jpc order in a very long time  - I'm proud of myself. 8)

QuoteThe Telemann discs are fabulous by the way!

I know! I almost pulled the trigger on the grand and wind concertos sets, but I even have less space for those "bricks"...

An outstanding set! Probably my top Sibelius cycle at the moment.

TD: From ArkivMusic's one-day sale:

I had the David Zinman Mahler cycle in the cart, but decided not to order it...
So much great music, so little time...

Quote from: j winter on February 16, 2023, 01:03:53 PMCan I ask where you found that?  I've literally wanted that soundtrack since I was 12...  :o
Of course!
It came from ebay. If you type in 'Excalibur Expanded Trevor Jones Incl. Alternate Tracks'. When I just checked there was one available (new) from Austria at £29.99. This is not cheap but not ridiculous either (mine was £25.99 from UK). I saw the film at the cinema when it first came out (1981) and loved it. Nicol Williamson's Merlin is, of course, the highlight. I think that I bought the soundtrack LP at the time and, years later, found a CD (Lancelot label  ::) ) which turned out to be a promotional copy with no information. I was still very pleased to have it on CD. The 25th Anniversary edition (which I haven't yet received) has quite a few more tracks on it.
Good luck with finding a copy.
PS from 16:38 in this review there is a discussion of the soundtrack:

Found three discounted discs at Amazon that prompted me to not stream.  The Naxos disc comes in at old Naxos pricing, and is a must have since Nino Gvetadze is involved.  I didn't know that Ugorskaja recorded a chamber disc, so that was a must buy.  The Goldbergreflections ended up in the basket both to hear what the Goldbergs transcribed for violin and orchestra sounds like, but even more for the new short, compositions by eleven composers sprinkled throughout.

Finally found a reasonably used copy of this for an attractive price.

This represents my exasperation with EMI's handling of the Roussel catalog. I have everything on this 2CD set already, except the Dervaux recording of the second symphony, and this is the only way to get it. (I am a Roussel fanatic and a Dervaux fanatic so it was not optional.)

Something really off the beaten track:

Armando Alfonso (b. 1931) is the doyen of music in the Canary Islands. Active as composer, teacher and conductor (under his tenure from 1968 to 1985, the Canary Islands Chamber Orchestra evolved into the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, significantly expanding its repertoire). The works on this CD span more than 60 years of activity. The early Suite (from 1956) is a sort of subtropical approximation to 12-tone techniques (news from Darmstadt and Donaueschingen was reaching the archipelago in those years), while the later works appear —from what I've sampled on YouTube— more late-romantic (but contemporary sounding).

Tenerife-born pianist Javier Negrín (whom I experienced live some years ago on the island as one of the soloists in Bartók's Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion) made it a point to record this CD as a homage to the composer (who was one of his teachers and dedicated some pieces to him).

I may be wrong, but those leafless trees on the cover don't seem to be from anywhere near the Canary Islsnds.  ;D

The Delos CD was cheaper (S/H) than the Naxos CD

From Bongiovanni in Bologna:

This CD of songs by Wolf-Ferrari has long been out of print, but Bongiovanni has (had?) affordable new copies. The presence of Bruno Canino at the piano is an added bonus (I've never encountered mezzo Yvi Jänicke before).

Madonna Imperia (after Balzac) is a one-act comic opera, and is the first that Alfano composed after his completion of Puccini's Turandot (and all the vicissitudes that generated).

Wishlisted both, especially the Wolf-Ferrari. Thanks for posting them.

My pleasure, Andrei, and good evening to you.

I had been after that Wolf-Ferrari CD for quite a while, but couldn't locate any affordable copies until I looked at Bongiovanni's site (https://www.bongiovanni70.it/en). Their speciality is Italian music, mainly opera (including obscure repertoire and historic recordings).

Un abrazo,

Reminds me of this old Mono release from Mercury, which I had in an LP of almost unlistenable condition, but which seemed to have potential.

Thanks, much obliged!  Time to get hunting...
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

I feel nearly certain that I have this in my Mercury Living Presence box. Of course, there's more than one, but this feels familiar.

I have Mercury Living Presence Collectors Edition I, II and III and don't think it's there (relatively few mono recordings were included). Which box do you have?

I have all three boxes and definitely don't remember the cover. Nor do I remember any Loeffler in them.  Did Hanson record the Griffes more than once?

Then I am mistaken, and ought not to have speculated in that wise.
