Fabulous. I'm a big fan of The Royal Philharmonic Collection series of CDs. The sound is invariably good, and the performances are fine, fine, fine.

I have that CD and from the same source, can't recall what I paid. Not the first name for the repertoire but impressive just the same.

Took a long time for the price to come down, but finally got this.
It's all good...

More 50p Rachmaninoff from a charity shop in another town yesterday  :D.

Spotted Horses

Got a cash present and used it as a pretext to go on a bit of a spree. (I hardly buy any CDs now that I have adopted streaming, but I like the big archival sets.)

Katchen, Complete Decca

It was eating away at me that I somehow got rid of his Brahms set, and now it is hardly any more expensive to get the whole thing, rather than just the Brahms.

Barbirolli, Complete Columbia

I am a huge admirer of Barbirolli. I have the Barbirolli Complete Warner (EMI) and this finishes it.

Complete Cleveland Quartet on RCA

This set is abuse-free, mostly new to CD, and samples of the Brahms are to die for.

Rodzinski, Complete Cleveland on Columbia

Rodzinski, Complete NY Philharmonic on Columbia

Took a chance of grooves.land, which has the best price on these. I know basically nothing of Rodzinski, but like the idea of hearing Cleveland and NY Philharmonic during a formative period.

Decided I needed some competition to my Aeolian Quartet in the field of MI Haydn, and this was substantially cheaper than the Kodaly Quartet (of which I have several individual CDs) and includes the early not-SQs.

Buchbergers are PI though, they just tune to 440 instead of 420.

They are? No one seems to mention them at all.

Oh no we've talked about them a great deal in the past, especially since they're part of the Haydn Edition.  Which by the way never had a volume 2!  Arg!  The Buchbergers are really zippy and aggressive.  I think most of us prefer Festetics, Mosaiques and London Haydn Quartet because of their more relaxed, congenial vibe.  But I'm sure there are some fans of those assertive performances on board.

So "four friends having a conversation" becomes "four friends having an argument"?

Meantime I just ordered this from Amazon MP seller Oxfordshire England

HIP on modern instruments (instruments with modern configuration).  I've always found it interesting that the Festetics, playing on period instruments, make a warmer sound than quartets like the Buchbergers playing modern instruments.

I'm a Buchberger guy. They really dig in and have a good time. Mosaiques are so refined and elegant they put me right to sleep 8)

That is probably because they use gut strings, which produce a warmer sound.

JS Bach - Organ Works (Fagius -17CD)

(On Ebay, not the below version but 17 CDs taken from the Bach Brilliant Edition, sold as a bunch)

JS Bach - Organ Works (Stockmeier - 20CD)

Both sets for around £8 each.

For the above, I blame @premont @SurprisedByBeauty and the other contributors to the Bach Organ thread between 2007 and 2010 (pages 1 to 37). I expect more such damage as I read on....  ;D

The Buchberger play on modern instruments. I don't know how so many people got the idea they were a historically oriented quartet, even though they might have adopted some stylistic choices from historically informed practice, e.g. using little vibrato, thus they sound differently than e.g. the Amadeus quartet.

Stockmeier is good.  There was a poster that got me into the set at the time.  But I don't remember who they were!

I've been tempted to purchase some of Evelyn Glennie's CDs (I've watched at least one of her videos on YT), but don't know much about percussive works, so not quite certain where to dive in.  In any event, what a great find by you!

Isn't it wonderful to stumble across some new finds and at such a great price?  I've picked up a number of musical treats from my local library (most on CD, but also some on LP).  And if I'm not particularly keen on the music, well at least I can tell myself that I helped out my library (even if it's just a tiny bit).

There's also a store in the area that regularly has sales on books, CDs, and DVDs for really cheap prices too.  You do have to be in a very patient mood though:  oftentimes the CDs are trashed (I'm pretty picky too), but I have picked up some nice finds there.  For example, I found a double CD set of the Eagles' "Long Road Out Of Eden" (one of their last ones) which on initial listen, I enjoyed two of the songs.  Upon listening to it some more, I've really come to appreciate it.  The recording quality is also primo and oh, their harmonies!  Price:  $1 USD.

Yeah I guess I was wrong there.  I guess I conflated a hazy memory of quasi-HIP with PI.
