"Uh, my name's Kevin but, uh, I'm not an addict. Nono, really, really, listen, listen to this. I got in trouble with my buying habits, right, okay, and my lawyer told the judge that I'm an addict, but I'm not addicted to buying Beethoven Piano Cycles!"

Tiny, tiny order from the Presto sale.

Curious to hear Becker in Dussek. He's a forceful interpreter. Should be stimulating.

O.k., when's the real order then?

Quote from: Madiel on January 05, 2026, 03:31:11 AMThe purple version doesn't have sung texts. This might or might not influence your decision. When this 10-disc box came out, there was a separate 4-disc box (red) with the oratorios.

I listened to most or all of the volumes a few years back as I went through Mendelssohn's opuses, and they made a strong impression on me.

Did you already own Elijah/Paulus (or alternative versions) beforehand or it is just (beside the texts availability) that this second-hand 10-cd became available ?

Going through the samples on Presto at the moment and I am not sure about Elijah/Paulus myself, but the rest so far is ticking the boxes.

No, I don't own Elijah or Paulus as yet. But I definitely want the libretti for any of these things. Even if we're dealing with Psalm texts and the like, I'd still prefer it, though certainly for those oratorios I'd want proper booklets.

There were other factors too in grabbing this set but not grabbing the 4-disc oratorio box at the same time. Including a minor discount offer on a copy, but also just knowing that I had a slightly higher interest in the contents of the 10-disc set.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Thank you, I was just curious.

It turns out that my cheapest option for the box... might have been direct from Carus itself. Certainly, it would have been the cheapest for a brand new copy, and would have been competitive against the second-hand one that I bought.

Ah well. Such is life. Plus the particular copy I bought has a minor piece of history that I liked.

is it being sold to you by Joel Selwood ?  :o

Never thought about checking Carus directly. On me way.

Edit: Presto remains better for me, as I am not too worries about the physical element of the purchase in this case.

Another one for the road:

JS Bach - Great Sacred Works (Michel Corboz) - Like New from Ebay.

Loved the sound of the choir in the Weihnachtsoratorium and the Johannes Passions. With Equiluz to boot in the "recitatives". This might just convince me about the Matthaus too, which I usually struggle with.

Added Bonus: If a cashback offer tracks correctly, this set could eventually cost me the huge price of £1.50-ish.

And the Winschermann box landed too despite the poor weather. All Good.

I had one more item, but it was removed from a sale even though the sale was still ongoing. (It might have gone out of stock.) I guess there's always next time...?  :'(  ;D

Someone in the UK is selling their deceased father's extensive collection.

The father had good taste. I kept seeing things that I already own. Including but not limited to about 6 Vivaldi operas...

Going to a good home then  :)  That's what we can wish for with our own collections maybe.

p.s.  So, maybe in the eating thread, do some updates there?  Recent reviews/home cooking/eating out, etc.  :-D
