Speaking of Herbie the K:
Bought today at Barnes and Noble,  prompted in part by recent discussion with John (MI) and a buy 2, get the third free sale,  three CDs from the Karajan 80s Beethoven cycle:

Symphonies 3 c/Egmont; 5 and 6; 9

The three remaining CDs in the set will probably be picked out of Amazon MP in the next day or two.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Why, aren't you convinced by Karajan as Haydn interpreter?

No, it's not that. I have one disc already (with 93, 94, 100) so I know what to expect. I'm just trying to justify another set of Londons in a collection that's already bursting at the seams. I have Szell, Jochum, Bernstein, Tate, Kuijken, Norrington (twice), Minkowski, Klemperer's partial, and everything that Fey has recorded so far along with dozens of singles by other conductors. So when I think, And why not add Karajan? a voice shouts back, "And why not Davis or Harnoncourt or Solti too?" To which I have no answer. By the way, I'm seeing a shrink about that annoying voice in my head  ;D

Not meaning to sound snarky, but if you "know what to expect" but aren't sure if you want it...you aren't very likely to be listening to it much, are you?
Maybe you'd be better off with what you don't expect >:D   I'm really into Scherchen just now, and am playing this.

Really interesting interpretations, IMO.  Certainly not like any other Haydn I have, anyway.
It's all good...

Very nice, Jeffery!

I've enjoyed the Brook Street Band's Oxford Water Music disc.

The Letzbor looks enticing too!

No, I'm sure I want it just like I'm sure I want Solti, Harnoncourt, Davis and, yes, Scherchen  ;)  The question is, the question I wrestle with is, do I need another set of Londons. And will I even have time to fully appreciate them? Considering what I already own, and considering my rapidly decreasing life-expectancy, can I justify another set at this point in my life?

Ah, OK, now I understand.  All too well! It's too bad we don't all live in the same neighborhood.  We could just swap stuff out every day...I have so much good stuff on my shelves I can't listen to (not enough hours in the day), that I feel kind of guilty, like a miser.

The Rattle disc mainly for the Brahms/Schoenberg Quartet, but I do enjoy Schoenberg's chamber symphonies.
