I have the Buxtehude set as well.  It looks like the packaging has not changed ...

Halley's Comet, resignation of The Pope, Cubs winning the World Series, ThGSMoeller buying Mahler.
These are some rare occurrences, but two out the four have happened this year. Yep, I bought some Mahler. Vocal Mahler, that is.

I used to have an intense dislike for Mahler's works in my youth (while in college) but bought the first cycle by Bernstein (the latest remastered set) about 4 years ago and now have some 4 cycles.

I was opposite. In high school my brother and I were huge Mahler fans. The more I branched out and explored more classical music I began to listen less and less to Gustav. Even to the point where I went years without listening to one of his pieces. What's interesting is that the 4th and 8th were the two I paid the least attention to back then, but the past few months I've been listening to various recordings of these on Spotify and am beginning to build a higher appreciation for these two over the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 9th.

What cycles do you have, Coop?

Bernstein, Haitink, Tennstedt and Sinopoli (still in shrinkwrap).  I actually have enough individual Mahler Symphonies to make up a fifth set, just short of Symphony No. 7 IIRC.

In my youth while I was in grad school, my grad school buddy also had an intense dislike for Mahler's music, which he derided as music for old folks ...

The DG Bernstein from 90s of the 2nd, 3rd and 7th with NYP were the ones that we praised, we lived in NJ during that time and would take the train to see the NYP and Philadelphia Orchestra, they were like Rock-Stars to us, and their brass sections were monsters. These three Mahler recordings demonstrated that power of the brass wonderfully. And I should have added that my brother and I were (he still is) brass players which was why we were so attracted to Mahler so early on.

Someone told me there is a strong correlation between heavy metal and Mahler as he noticed a number of people who love heavy metal also like Mahler music for some reasons ...

True. My brother is also a huge Metallica and Tool fan.

Of the several items in your batch that I know, Joe, I'd say you were in for many days (actually years) of deeply pleasurable listening. Of course, I only got to that Borodin ESSENTIAL collection maybe a week ago, but what a nice introduction to his sound-world.  I don't know if I will collect Borodin, but what aromatic music!  As to this

, if the Sonatas Collecting Bug bites you (assuming it has not....I know that the Sonatas Bug has bitten you), you might keep in the back of your mind the desire to hear Kempff's 50s mono recordings of the sonatas.  Not done terribly long before the stereo set you got (which I think is great)---10-12 years?---but I am so glad I invested in these.  For quite a while I thought, "No, it's crazy for me to have two cycles by the same guy, there I draw the line..." but *wowsa*.  Comparisons between his two traversals is fascinating for me, and I've only done a tiny bit of such comparison (a few key sonatas).

Got a good deal for this Taneyev:

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.
