Do let me know what you think of this performance, Spineur. I've been looking for a more modern recording of Pelleas et Melisande and have been disappointed with the ones from Dutoit and Abbado. Boulez's earlier performance on Columbia is still my gold standard.

Pre-ordered it on Presto Classical - best deal I could find.

Crespin has been treated rather indifferently by record companies since her retirement. This is a really swell compilation, comprising as it does some familiar classics as well as some hard to find plums. The arias disc under Ackermann in particular is very hard to find.

Good morning Que!
That looks really interesting.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

The spoils of my busniess trip to Munich this week.... :)

From the amazing classical section on the 5th floor of the Ludwig Beck department store next to the Marienplatz:

[asin]B001F114H6[/asin]I expect these to be very compelling renditions by Mrs. Oppens of Elliott Carter's piano music (I already own the larger pieces played by Charles Rosen).

[asin]B072K3PLCX[/asin]This star-studded release of Carter's late concertante works has received excellent reviews. I heard Interventions live in concert shortly after it was composed, and know Dialogues from previous recordings, but the remaining pieces on the CD are new to me.

[asin]B01MUXVERH[/asin]I recently caught Christiane Karg on Spanish National Radio singing some Richard Strauss lieder, and was blown away by the beauty of her voice and the exquisite way she handles her instrument. This French program conducted by "local boy" David Afkham (a German of Iranian descent, but he's the chief conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra) looks very appealing and has also received rave reviews.

Some time ago, our fellow GMGer Dancing Divertimentian drew my attention to pianist Philippe Biancioni, and boy was he right: his Debussy Préludes and album of Ravel's piano music are top-notch, and this album of other Debussy works (the Estampes and Images being favourites of mine) was a no brainer (at 5€ in the discount bin).

[asin]B01GW63TP8[/asin]I already had this recording of Bomarzo in a limited (and sloppily produced) release by the Argentine consulate in Miami, but when I lstened to it recently, the CDs seemed to be degrading. This was also heavily discounted.

And from the enchantingly pêle-mêleDie Zauberflöte, (one of those stores a record collector could spend hours on end uncovering--in the literal sense--jewel after jewel, and owned by a charming man who appears to have stepped out from an earlier era):

[asin]B000KIX1KI[/asin]Mainly for Chabrier's La Sulamite, the Falla songs and Britten's Les Illuminations (one of the few works by this composer that I really enjoy).   Suzanne Danco was a very intelligent singer with a remarkable breadth of repertoire (I'm not that much of a fan of Ernest Ansermet, though).

This long OOP disc is AKAIK one of only two recordings of both books of Boulez's Structures, and it was missing from my (comprehensive ;)) PB CD collection (and Mrs. Chen tends to be very convincing in this repertoire).

Finally, from the Bauer & Hieber music store behind the Rathaus:

This collection of essays edited by Wieland Wagner may give some interesting insights on the reception of his grandfather Richard's work in the early sixties of the past century. The list of contributors is encouraginly eclectic (ranging from e.g. Deems Taylor and Ernest Newman to Adorno and Ernst Bloch).

Just bought this for a mere sixpence:

Spineur

A bit of Erik Satie

Le fils des étoiles: a rarely performed piece by the very imaginative Alexei Lubimov

[asin]B004754SG6[/asin]

a disk I had been circling around for quite some time.  This transcription of Satie "easy music" (Gnossiennes & Gymnopedies) for the guitar, motivated the purchase

[asin]B06X9G2YP4[/asin]

I already have the piano version played by Anne Queffelec.  Sampling the disc, I found that the guitar with its more fragile sound gives an even more aerial and gliding feeling to these wonderfully peaceful music.

Yes, the guitar works very well in Satie. You can also listen to Pierre Laniau's EMI recordings here.

Thought I'd give myself a (belated) birthday present, and ordered all the Skalkottas releases on BIS that were missing from my collection before they go out of print (all of which were being offered at attractive prices at Arkiv  :) ):
