Just now. The Monteverdi is listed as Low stock, so I have to cross my fingers

The Monteverdi set proved to be back ordered, and remained that way  for so long I thought it would be cancelled. But checking  tonight, I saw it was shipped today.

More bargain basement shopping.  Some titles go fast as Add-ons.  I was going to get Josef Špaček's Prokofiev/Smetana/Janacek disc, too, but someone snagged the sole copy before I could buy.

I'm not expert, either  :)  . . . I do have the Spang-Hanssen 6-CD box, and (as it turned out) I listened to a bit of it in the car last night.  I do like it.

(Scarpia, did you yield to the temptation?)

I yielded to the temptation to the extent that the set is on my shelves. The discs have not been out of their sleeves yet.

The Monteverdi bos is also a gem of the first order. To bad I have so many CD'S waiting to be listen to, otherwise I would play the whole box again. But I am in the process of re-playing the madrigali box and that yields a lot of pleasure too.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Is it worth seeking out in terms of performance/instrument sound?

It's from the 50's, so sound is dated. Performances are fine, but not outstanding enough to make me forgo modern sound. I wouldn't have gotten it if I had already had the other recording.

OK, thank you for those comments  :)

An operatic rarity which I had been after for quite a while. I spotted a new copy very reasonably priced at a B&M shop close to home here in Madrid.

As close as we get to an opera by Mahler?

Arrived today:

Mine has the American cover, a butterfly on white background. "Travel back to a simpler time," urges the promo blurb on the rear insert. This is surely the most dubious HIP in my collection. The Strauss and Barber pieces were written well after modern strings and playing style became the norm. But it was cheap and might be interesting to hear.

I like the Smithsonian Players directed by Kenneth Slowik.  I would like to hear these works with gut-strung instruments.  Thanks.

If you are thinking of terms in SQ this set is too dated, even if it is in early stereo (1957!!). But the interpretation makes it unique. Similar questions could be raised about Schnabel's Beethoven and the Busch Quartet's recordings and many other historical recordings.
