You didn't mention Smetana. The aforementioned composers were Dvorak and Janacek.
I think an earlier respondent mentioned Smetana and Suk as better/more relevant Czech composers than Martinu. The question is if this is about Mirror Images "Avatar of the week" or the history of (Czech) music... The former is his personal thing, in the latter the status of Martinu is comparable to Suk but hardly to Smetana, Dvorak and Janacek.

I acquired if a few years ago and the set is overwhelming.  I have only listened to some of the discs.

I have an Amazon credit card and earned enough Amazon points to get it for nothing.   :D :D :D

Exotic stuff, Sarge  :D.  Never heard a note of Bendix and yet I'm quite well served in terms of danish music. Please report in due time !

I think he meant "after" in the chronological sense, not in the ranking sense.

Maybe we should stop using the word "after" because it can be ambiguous, like "atonal."  >:D

A great post!
Of course, this is the greatest post after yours.  8)

But yes, it seems clear, after this post, that that is indeed what John meant.

I suppose my initial after (the afore mentioned composers) didn't even weigh into your thought process when you made this post. ::)

I hadn't either until just a few days ago when I accidentally heard his First Symphony on YouTube (it began playing automatically after the video I'd been listening to ended). Liked what I heard and ordered the set the same day. According to Wiki, Bendix was a student of Gade and a friend of Nielsen.

This is exactly what I meant. I didn't mean to pit one composer against another. I suppose I shouldn't have used the word recognized either since this apparently caused some ambivalence amongst several members as well. :)

There is also a piano concerto on the Danacord label.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Parsifal

Was kicking myself for selling it, but saw it on sale at Presto and got it back for only $7 more than the sum I sold it for..

Pulled the trigger on Leslie Howard's complete Liszt set,...I knew sooner or later this would be in my collection.

The best overall deal I saw was on jpc.de.

Lovely set, I've listened to almost none of it. I see it goes for $300 or so now on Amazon, I got in for about 160 Euros from the French bee site when there was a big sale.

There are some quite charming things in there, IMO.

Every Thursday there is a antiques & books market in the city centre, where I happen to work.

A few bargains picked up during my lunch break from a stall that sells 2nd hand books, records and CDs (in excellent condition):

The two Reichenauer were already on my wishlist, got the other two on account of the Czech label Arta being great in period instruments recordings and out of sheer curiosity...  :)

Um yes, when using the word at the same time as referring to someone as the greatest/best, it is not at all obvious that chronology is meant instead of the ranking.

I mean, something like "greatest" IS a ranking word. How the blazes you managed to figure out the sentence had 2 topics rather than 1, I've no idea. Because every single reader that mentioned Smetana clearly thought that "greatest after" meant "next greatest"... and even as I write that I have to think whether "next" is a problem. "3rd greatest out of Czech composers".

But then, it's taken you to explain it. Mirror Image just went into sulk mode.

And why mention both Dvorak and Janacek?  Those are not 2 contemporaneous composers in my view. Janacek's successes happened after Dvorak's death.

And yes, I just used the word "after". WITH A CHRONOLOGICAL EVENT.

Madiel

And even if you take that into account, Mirror Image is still responsible for introducing the notion of best composer of the time period, and then complaining that he "didn't know it was a competition" the moment someone had a different view.

So no, the issue is not simply ambiguity. The issue is the inability to deal with conflict or misunderstanding in a meaningful way instead of employing an eye-rolling emoji at the first opportunity.

Try the Bendix Piano Concerto on Spotify before you buy.  It's there.
