The early experimental works have lured me in initially but he's quite varied and I'm willing to give Neo-Romantic a chance. The samples of music for just one or two instruments haven't grabbed me but I'm going to give these a listen first then go back and check out what else I might like. The downloads are certainly very convenient, the ALACs imported straight into iTunes and just needed some tidying up. Much quicker than copying CDs.

Very nice, indeed. I hope you enjoy your Pendereckian journey.

I "blame" the contributors in the Moeran thread for those purchases  0:)

Blame them, but enjoy. Even an outlandish foreign stranger like me did it, with all of these treasures (literally read & listened to all of them). Why not you?  ???
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Sorted out what else I wanted in the Naxos download sale. Penderecki's massively loud choral works appeal to me as well as his earlier avant garde period.

For peace and quiet I chose Takemitsu.

A good choice. A great disc. Takemitsu is one of my favorite composers.

Oh I will Christo. The samples of the violin concerto and Cello concerto sounded enticing. Various members praising the Dilkes (including Jeffrey, multiple times !!  ) as a different lighter approach to the Boult was enough to grab this cheap used copy on Ebay...just have to wait now  :)

Another purchase for the road :

Just bought:

I need another Le sacre like I need a hole in the head, but I didn't own Markevitch's classic 1959 recording and this Japanese import is a DSD transfer, so it should sound great.

I was also really impressed by the 1963 Boulez recording with the ORTF Orchestra:

About half of Fauré's chamber music was missing from my collection (specifically, those works not included in this set):

Instead of going for volume 1 by the same performers, I went for this:

I've read mixed reviews (particularly regarding the sound quality), but at the price I bought, I'd thought I'd give it a shot.

The first order this year.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Good morning/evening to you, Rafael. I've read some disparaging reviews about that particular Fauré box set. It seems I've got all the bases covered with my mixture of recordings from Hyperion, Harmonia Mundi, and RCA. I also own all of those EMI recordings with Collard et al. Definitely looking forward to hearing what you think about that Virgin Classics (Erato) set.

This recording was my first encounter with Sacre about forty-five years ago - in this incarnation:
