The Philips has a more engaging orchestral contribution but this one is also worth seeking out. There are two more quintana/harmonia mundi discs, on with K 414 and 488 and one with K 595 and another B flat major but I have not heard them as they have been hard to get for years.

Those seem to be Hungaroton releases, which are available as lossless downloads on Presto.

I have the Aho which I like very much and am tempted by those DGG Rachmaninov releases.

That's what makes Kocsis so appealing - consistency! Whether it's Bach or Liszt or Bartok, you know it's going to be first-rate.

I'd recommend listening to his Debussy piano music, as well as his Rachmaninov (he recorded a smattering of smaller pieces, the Second Sonata, and all of the Concerti) - it's all excellent!

That set has long intrigued me! Let us know your impressions, André.

I will !

That's a great cycle. You might want to complete it with this:

I didn't know about that recording!  I have a feeling that I missed out on a cheaper box set.  I will start listening to that third recording soon.  And maybe I'll be ordering it in the future.  Thanks for the headsup.

I certainly endorse this Aho purchase. ;) I'm sure the Rachmaninov is quite fine, too.

You're welcome. I don't think the three recordings were boxed.

Added this one to the orderlist. I have the two previous Volumes already, so its only logical.

I have had Bryden Thomson's single A Sea Symphony recording since the early 90's, but never moved further into his cycle. Today is the day!

Both are fine choices, VonStupp! Next to Boult (EMI) and Previn, the Thomson is my third favorite and the sonics are splendid. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! That concertos 2-CD set is also top-drawer. I'm sure Jeffrey (Vandermolden) will comment as well. :)

I have the little set of RVW concertos, but not the symphonies. The concertos are excellent.

This landed today. Presto notified me it was shipped in Tuesday, so theoretically it took just 5 days to transit from UK to Florida. [Usually it takes 7-8 days for Presto orders to arrive; I suspect they actually shipped it over the holiday weekend.]

Indeed!  :)
I think very highly of the Thomson cycle - all the performances are strong. My favourites are No. 6 (Top Choice BBC Classical Music Guide), No.9, and No.8. The double CD set with the original fillers is excellent in all respects.

I was always impressed with the Chandos capturing of the LSO in A Sea Symphony, a work I gravitated to immediately upon hearing, but am not sure why I didn't follow it up.

Glad to hear the rest it is of a quality, as I was never completely satisfied with my CFP Handley cycle except in fits and starts.  :)

What's the music like Harry?

Tonal, late Romantic, with some modern twists and turns. He writes fine melodies, and always has something unexpected coming out. He was always an outsider, and made his own unique path, apart from other influences, and that is especially why I bought it, it feels akin. Try to sample before you buy. Lauber is not easily won over, but once you find his intrinsic core, it rewards. That's my two cents. I would say you could stream the first two CD's but I do not think that you could or would. I am curious what you make of them.
