I love these older Abravanel Vanguard recordings, but, more importantly, I love these Bloch works. :)

Good to read, Andre. 8) I've been meaning to check out this composer for ages. I heard one of his symphonies last year or so and I didn't quite connect with it, but I don't think I was quite in the mood for it at the time.

Your appetite for new composers to you is growing more and more, John!  ;)

Vermeulen has a unique voice. His sense of rhythm, harmony and orchestration is fascinating in my view.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL more than ever!

Certainly, Cesar. I've known of Vermeulen's name for quite some time, but this box set that contains the orchestral and chamber music was incredibly difficult to come by. By pure happenstance I ran across an auction for the set on eBay that was in its last five minutes. Right place, right time. :)

A mixed bag:

Franco Margola's Piano Trío made a favourable impression on me recently. Let's see what his music for solo piano is like.

For the Scarlatti/Tommasini The Good-Humoured Ladies. I'm not really a fan of Ibert, and particularly dislike his Divertissement (and don't expect my opinion of the piece to change after hearing it conducted by the great Roger Désormière).

A used copy of this elusive OOP CD finally surfaced on the internet, and at an affordable price. Maderna's last concert in 1973.

Mainly for another take on Maderna's Serenata per un satellite, one of his "open" works (although Don Perlimplin is also an interesting work).

And more literature on Maderna (almost 1,200 pages between both volumes):

Indeed, but also a feeble mind, which goes hand-in-hand with the knees. ;D

Great stuff John! The Ben-Haim CD is especially fine.

With a h/t to Cesar as I need to explore this composer. Next stop his chamber works.
Woohoo! You are having a field day John. Those are two of my favourite CDs.

I got to know those works through the original LP featuring those recordings (initially taken out of a record library). They are both absolutely classic performances. I think that Alto, the company for whom I write occasional booklet notes, handles the distribution of those Vanguard CDs in the UK.

I have Christo (get well soon Johan) to thank for my introduction to several fine Dutch composers.

Thanks, Jeffrey! I'm definitely looking forward to hearing all of these recordings.
