No need to be embarrassed, Conor.  I had a similar scenario when starting to explore classical music (well, it worked!) I wanted to explore more deeply from listening to such put together compilations.  I think that is the goal or key to these type of collections.  To satisfy a perhaps curious ear.  :)

Thanks Ray - Yes I certainly dont regret starting out on these "best of" kind of compilations, they served me well!  :D

Haha, I used to own a couple of the "Chill With" series when i first started getting into classical music a few years back - I had the Beethoven, Chopin and Vivaldi ones I think. Kind of embarrassing to admit now but I really enjoyed them and it got me interested in seeking out the full works and eventually progressing to other composers and stuff  :D :-[

No shame in any gateway drug, Conor!  It is to your credit that you are voracious enough to investigate further.  Plus, there will always be classical mavens who ridicule you for getting the "wrong" interpretation, the "wrong" recording, the "wrong" edition, or even for digging the "wrong" composers; you will never be in the clear, as it were.   Even mentors can be myopic.  Consider it an occupational hazard of getting into pretty much any kind of art at all; maybe a by-product of the culture of idolatry?
But now my own acquisition pleasure is blunted.  Every time my hand hovers over the "finalize order" button, anywhere, I will hear a little voice whispering hoarsely in my ear, like Alemu Aga on his HARP OF KING DAVID recording, murmuring "Chill with box set!"

It's happened again...

I'm your companion in following....I just ordered that tonight, along with the "Mozart Edition" and "English Renaissance and Baroque Edition" boxes from that same series.  Not sure about the Mozart, but I think the Telemann and English sets will be completely new music through and through for me.

Glad to have you on board, Jeffrey!  :) Those "Edition" sets look nice, and at affordable prices I may indulge in a few more. And I'm excited for the Telemann to arrive.

Just ordered this set to hear what Pletnev does with;
The Isle of the Dead
Symphonic Dances
The Rock
The Bells &
John of Damascus
cantata.  The Cantata being a new work to me.

The 3 Symphonies are a bonus, hopefully a good one?

I only know the second symphony, which is a bit controversial. I like it, but will be interested to hear what you think.

What's controversial about Pletnev's Rach 2nd?

Mostly the speed of the Adagio, though first movement too. This usually leads to criticism - meaning too cold or lacking in beauty (less overtly emotional).

I like a slower Adagio, so, thankfully, I never listened to Pletnev's performance.

I was hoping for something a little more controversial, like having the tuba perform all the flute solos.  :-X

Or having the said movement performed Celibidache-style! 8)

Icy Rach*!  Piques my interest, and under $20 on Amazon MP.  Ordered, with thanks to you all.

*I was tempted to write "Rachmaninov on the rocks"  but even I think that's an awful pun.

Janacek vs. Smetana 4tt (Denon/Supraphon)
ASIN: B0032BFMH0

Hat-tip, Luke.  I opted for this short disc with only the two quartets because I found it used very cheap; I was considering the two separate Testament discs with other non-Janacek material, but in the end I just didn't want to spend the extra money.  I love this music, but I've never heard idiomatic performances; it seems that I'll have to check out the Janacek Quartet's and the Skampa Quartet's as well, at least.

Pressed the order button for these items that have been sitting in my Presto shopping cart

Mostly a matter of keeping myself up to date with these performers series, atlhough to be totally au courant with the Naive Vivaldi, I need to order the most recent opera (Orlando 1714).

Despite the tons of Mahler recordings I already have,  this will be only my fourth recording of Klagende Lied (Rattle, Chailly, MTT being the three in hand) and two of those only because they appear in the EMI and DG Complete Mahler boxes.  And I have next to nothing of the Berg, as well....

Good thing you remedied this, Jeffrey. Berg is one of my favorites. I was listening to his Seven Early Songs, Altenberg-Lieder, and Der Wein the other night and all of these are extremely beautiful works for voice and orchestra.
